Why can't I message players directly?
Why can't I message other players directly, both within my own alliance and players I've played against?

They paid for? What do you mean? I and other players are the one who are paying money. EA is on the receiving end of the money, methinks.
Designing a website and hosting it on a server isn't free. Those are the rules for accessing their material. Sure, you paid for it by proxy of paying for their games, but you paid for the game, not for this forum. So this forum (contrary to your opinion) is not public domain.
