Yuri's Revenge strange graphical problem, can't play

I bought and downloaded the Origin version of Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.  When I start the program, I can hear the animated intro, but I don't see it.  The stationary title screen is visible, but when I get to the menu, all animated parts of the menus don't show up.  Since the menu buttons themselves are animated, that means no menu choices.  The background is there, and I can exit by clicking where I know the exit button is, and that brings up a visible dialog box.  Since the menu structure is not visible, I can't start the game.  The computer is an Asus laptop that's about a year old and running Windows 7.  I have tried Windows' own compatibility tool, but its only result was to declare that RA2LAUNCHER.EXE was not compatible.  Anyone got any ideas?
