Dead Space 1: PS3 Dualshock Right D-Pad Crashes Game Instantly

Alright, this is a bit of a long one.

I got Dead Space on Origin. Wanted to use a controller. Tried using a PS4 controller. D-pad up and d-pad right didn't work, registering 2 weapon slots unusable.

Used a knock-off PS3 controller. D-pad worked fine, but the controller had a broken X button, so that was a no-go.

Found another PS3 controller. No inputs registered, both in-game and on Windows itself (used the test in device settings and none of the buttons or sticks worked).

Dug deep in a google search, found a up-to-date and maintained PS3 controller driver for windows 10 HERE (https://github.com/ViGEm/DsHidMini).

Booted up Dead Space.

"Press any key" prompt showed up, pressed O, worked.

Pressed up, left, and down d-pad keys. Would not function for menu navigation, likely wouldn't in-game either.

Pressed right d-pad key.

Game immediately crashed.

Restarting game didn't help, thorough testing proved that right d-pad would crash the game at any point, even before any inputs would otherwise register.

I'm going to mess with the "HID Device Emulation Mode" setting in the driver, which was set to SXS when the above occurred, and see if that helps. Will update if I find a solution in that.

If any of you know anything about why this happened and/or have any solutions, please let me know. If you need more details or anything, feel free to ask.

(And no, the driver's not a virus. It's made by the same person that made ScpToolkit, but more up-to-date. Also, yes, my system can run dead space. The starting sequence went fine without any FPS drops whatsoever.)

Yeah, it's a driver issue. I've talked with the guy on their forums, and it's a pretty simple fix. Nevermind, y'all!

  • UPDATE: Turns out the D-Pad is seemingly not supported in the GPJ and SDF modes for the driver I used, but it should still work in SXS. Doesn't, though. Still -- probably an issue of the driver. If y'all know of any alternatives or anything, though, please let me know.
