Bug report (PC): crash in rift battle in Hinterlands northwest

I am exploring the Hinterlands, making my way to see the horse master in the northwest of the region. There is a fade rift south of his location, just west of the possessed wolves' lair, at the base of a waterfall, just north of the Burning Man's Something-or-other. It's one of two fade rifts that has to be closed to help the farmstead by the horse master.

Every time I fight this rift battle, usually during the second wave of demons, the game will crash so hard that I have to power down or hard reset my computer. I haven't been able to tie it to a specific event in the battle. I have been able to complete other rift sequences in the game, including the rift north of the farm (an easier, shorter battle). Unfortunately, since the game crashes my system so completely, I'm unable to tell if there is an overheating or resource problem, but I doubt it - it's a new computer that has been through much more complicated scenes in DA:I without any trouble.

Crash Experience: Begin battle, complete first wave. Second wave appears, kill off one or two of those demons and suddenly my video turns off causing my monitor to go to sleep. Sound stops - I do not hear any ongoing sounds of the battle in progress, so I believe the game has halted. The video thing is the killer - I can't see what I'm doing, so everything else is guesswork. I try ctrl-alt-del, but it doesn't appear to do anything. I'm not used to Windows 8.1, so I don't know the keystrokes to trigger a reboot blind. I don't know if the OS is still running, or if the system is completely locked. I suspect it's locked. I have to power down or reset the machine in order to get video back.

This crash is consistent. I have attempted the battle 5 or 6 times, even approaching the area from different directions, and I have crashed every time. I never get far enough to attempt closing the rift, so that sequence has nothing to do with this crash. It always dies mid-battle. I was able to reach the horse master by running past this area, not engaging with the first wave demons, but since this rift has appeared as a quest marker for the farmers, I'm concerned I may end up blocked due to this bug.

One thing I haven't tried yet: I have not been back to that rift since it was added as a quest item for the farm (I found the rift before I found the farm). So I will try that next.

My system:

Windows 8.1

16 GB RAM

GeForce GTX 970

All drivers and the game are up to date. I would give you a version number for the game if I knew where to find it. I can also provide a save game just before the battle if that would help.

Same issue with the rift you describe.  I just avioded it.  I am deeper into the game and have had random hard crashes from time to time.  Rifts seem to cause a majority of the crashes. I have tried everything.  Hope EA/Bioware can id the problem.

Interesting. Does turning down settings have any effect? If you could PM me a copy of the save file you mention it could help.

Also, if it hasn't been tried already, please repair the game in Origin. Right-click the game panel to get the option to do so.

I was able to complete that battle after completing some northwestern quests and returning from the northwest to fight the battle. So I continued playing and have not encountered any bugs until today. I have nearly cleared the hinterlands region (except for Redwall) and then experienced the same crash in another rift. This is one of the two southwestern rifts in some forest region (sorry I don't remember the name), the western-most of the pair, deep in a cave just west of the large bear area where you can get great bear claws. This battle, just like the other one, also features despair demons who appear to have a nasty long-range attack. I don't know what the attack is, but it comes with a sound effect that I hear just after my screen goes dark. It's the last sound I hear from the game.

From where I sit, there appears to be a graphic effect tied to a despair demon attack which kills my video and crashes the game.

Interestingly, I have found that the system is not TOTALLY locked, but the video is. I can hit ctrl-alt-del twice (with a short pause in between) and I can tell that the system is rebooting. However, the video does not turn on again until I do a cold boot from a complete power off. I presume the system is booting because I see sudden hard drive activity, then my keyboard numlock indicator goes off, comes back on, then extended hard drive activity.

EA_David: I will send my savegame for this second battle as soon as I finish with this post. I will then see if the problem repeats, and then try dialing back my settings. I am playing on Ultra right now, with all the bells and whistles turned on, so there's plenty of room to retreat.

If your system is really and truly rebooting but the video doesn't come back up, and will only come back if you power the card down, then I would say you have a hardware issue and something about the attack triggers it.  If it was simply a software crash, and your op system reboots it should bring all other hardware back online.  But to have to power off to get a reset....may just be weird juju, but sounds like a hardware failure of some sort...

That's a good point. However, my story about the reboot is mostly guesswork - without video, I have to rely on other cues. I'm a new Windows 8 user, so I'm not familiar with all its quirks. I have also been through these fights and crashed in a way that no amount of ctrl-alt-dels would fix, so I had to hold down the power button to force a stop.

Doing rigorous testing on this makes me nervous. I don't like forcing any OS to do such a harsh shutdown, especially repeatedly.

I'm about to dive back in, this time with minimal graphics enabled, and see what happens.

I was able to repeat the crash with my usual graphics settings, so I changed the graphics to "Medium" and tried again. This time, I was able to complete the battle without trouble. I have no idea, of course, if that was just luck - Did I run the battle in such a way that the game-crashing graphic never executed? Hard for me to say.

My graphics setup looks like this (from the NVidia control panel):

Thanks, I got your save and unfortunately wasn't able to replicate the issue. I don't have a 970 to test but I did on a 770 and a 560ti. It might be worth removing and reinstalling a fresh set of graphics drivers. Perhaps there's some corruption of a driver file and a clean slate will help.

I frequently get a similar crash during fade rift battles. It is not restricted to Hinterlands, but does seem most frequent if desire demons are involved. I get a blank screen and system reboot, I can then hear the bios beeps and boops, and successive hard drive spinning so I know the computer has rebooted, though I have no video output. I then need to do a hard power down (hold down power button) and power back to restore video. I have found reducing the Ambient Occlusion from HBAO Full to SSAO reduces the frequency of the issue, but does not eliminate it. I have also encountered the issue inside some caves, notably the cave closest to the town of Crestwood (just to the east). A few months ago I was running with a GTX 770 and did NOT experience the issue. I was having a different issue (NVidia drivers were crashing to desktop with many different games very frequently). I RMA'd the video card, and got upgraded to the GTX 970 and have since started to experience this crash/reboot issue I am describing here. I have tested a handful of other games and benchmark with 3dMark (FireStrike), and everything else appears stable (no crash/reboot). Just to be sure, I actually just completed another RMA on my power supply, and this crash/reboot issue persists.
