Can you accidentally miss Leliana's butler decision?

I am 36 hours into the game, but I haven't got to Skyhold yet. I am a completionist, and I like to finish all available side quests before advancing the plot. Somehow, after going through prelude, hinterlands, val royeux, back to hinterlands, and storm coast, and talking to Leliana after each, I have not triggered the Butler decision. I have not done Champions of the Just and I only did the Redcliff part of Hushed Whispers so far...

I got scared and reloaded all of my backup saves and re-talk to Leliana on each. Apparently, literally right after the "My Sympathies" conversation, the agent appears and goes right to her. I must not have saw him after talking to her, and did not think anything of it because I just finished talking to her...

Will this re-trigger or am I screwed? I lost nearly 100 hours of play time because I wanted to restart and get the treasures of thedas and make better decisions, like softening Leliana. I really don't think I can stand to lose 30 hrs fixing this, so if I am screwed is there a console command that will trigger this or something else at least that will make the game think I made a choice?

BTW this seems like a horrible design flaw if such an interesting decision can be missed... could someone at EA help with this? This will literally ruin my experience...

  • Have never heard of anyone missing this conversation... Interesting. Wonder if that will mean she's hardened by default?
There are so many different decisions in the game (such as whether to do Champions of the Just or In Hushed Whispers), are you really only going to play it once? Can always soften her in a different playthrough if you've missed it this time. 😉 Really, the hardening/softening of Leliana doesn't have a huge impact on the game, there's one personal quest of hers later on where it makes a difference, and it can possibly make a difference in the end of game slides, depending on... things. (Don't know how much you know, so trying not to spoil things for you).

As I remember it, the conversation happens after you catch her praying/being mad at her god. An agent runs up to her, they talk about a traitor, and after a bit you can speak to her and influence her decision on what to do with said traitor. I've never missed it, so no idea if it re-triggers. I'm thinking it won't, though.
If you're really curious, you can PM me a link to your save file and I take a look at whether Leliana has been softened or not. Won't change anything (well, I probably could, but I won't), but at least you'll know.

I have attached a current save file.  Please tell me everything you can.  If you know how to fix it so the game acts as if I told Leliana not to kill Butler, please do so. If you can flip a byte and guarantee her as softened, that would be acceptable too...

I know I sound like a little wiener, but the number two reason why I restarted after nearly 200 hr of play was because I did not like how Left Hand of the Divine turned out (number 1 was to get the juicy late patch items I missed). This has just been really frustrating... if you want I can include the save that shows the ridiculous situation in detail, but I doubt anyone at Bioware will fix it. I swear this seems like an easy fix with a console command. I guess EA won't let Bioware publish this information like they used to...

OK, I can try making her softened, I've never tried it before so I don't know if it'll work (keep a backup copy of your saves. Generally a good idea anyway, as things do like to go wrong).

DAI uses a new engine (Frostbite 3 or something) than the other games, hence the lack of console commands. They're just not built in like with the previous engine. Probably also why modding is so much harder, too.
    PM incoming.
