Can't load save, says I need latest patch, but I do have latest patch

I get this message:

"This save data was created with a newer version of the game. Please download the latest patch and try again"

I am running the latest patch, and I have tried repairing the game with no luck, and deleting the patch and downloading it again, again with no luck. Is there anything else I can try?

  • Finally got it to work!!! First, what SashaCorshev mentioned earlier about having to have the game modded to launch is true. But what you also need is the right Version number. Open the package.mft. Right now the current patch is 6. So you need to change it to 7 or 8 to get it to load. I tried 7 and it didn't work, but I just tried 8 and it worked!

Thanks for the quick fix.  I have 150 hours into my first character, and wanted to finish some of the DLC with her... of course my game is mod'd but I haven't played in so long I didn't want to even start playing with all that.  I opened the patch file and increase the version by 1 and it worked!  🙌

Yeah, nothing is working for me. Changing Patch version to various numbers above 12, still errors. Using the Mod Manager and unchecking all mods and Merging or whatever, still errors. Guess that save (and all before it) are now useless. My punishment for trying to "move" my DA collection to Steam, I suppose. ☹️

  • This is years later.  I was having the same issue.  I had a patch backup.  Copied that into the modded game file (replacing the existing file) to have a clean patch folder.  I merged just the "official patch" with the DA:I mod manager.  I did nothing else. I started the game with Steam and hit continue.  It played and I am progressing.  When I got to Skyhold, I reinstalled my mods and all is well.  The issue is the complicated files of this cutscene.  I did all that is mentioned in this thread and nothing worked.  I hope this helps in the current year of 2024 and in the future

    1. copy and paste a clean "patch" in the game "update"/"patch"

    2. Use DA:I mod manager and ONLY merge the "Official Patch".

    3. Launch the game with Steam.  (I use steam, if you have a different install, launch it that way.)

    4. Use your "Continue Game".

    5. Let it play and when you reach Skyhold and after all the cutscenes, reinstall your mods and continue the game.

    6. If you are using "All skills trees for inquisitor", WAIT to install that after getting your specialization or you will still have frozen and/or corrupted files that cause issues. I use this mod and I waited until after getting my spec., all things work as intended and I am back to enjoying the game.

This is a big problem for a lot of people.  I got through IYHSB and walked through the snow and my game froze.  I've done a lot of different suggestions, and none worked to progress.

The solution I found is listed above.

    I hope this helps.

This remains to be the same problem and the solution is still also the same, it is also a Mod problem and not EA related.

    • Go to your "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\Update\Patch" folder.
    • Open the "package.mft" file with a text editor.
    • Change the Version number to one higher then the current number > SAVE the file! Sometimes, probably because of a specific mod you need to change the Version number 98.
    • Play the game.

If your game starts and crashes at some point you don't have this problem and increasing the patch number will not help you.
