Dialogue radial menu not working in quests

(Xbox360)Whenever I am on a quest, if my companions say something to me and I need to respond, the radial menu pops up grey, and won't actually let me respond. They then say "oh silence then, have it your way." Or something along those lines. I have updated the game with the new patch, reinstalled the game, started a new game, got hung up on by customer support in ea. someone help!
