DirectX crashes/driver issues

I note in a pinned post from 2014, an EA rep said EA/Bioware are working with NVIDIA on a solution for DirectX and driver CTDs.  I'm hoping for a progress update, because this problem is driving me spare.  I've attempted a multitude of fixes that can be found around the traps, but to no avail.  Bioware make wonderful games, but in it's current state, DA:I is unplayable, which is a real shame.

@Rhinoman80 Was worth checking, anyway. I found the GTX 570 was quite reliable with this game (other than overheating, but that only happened on 40C+ days). Of course, being computers, our systems also have many differences so what worked in mine won't necessarily work in yours, I don't even have the same version of Windows. 😛

There is something else in your dxdiag, several AppHangB1 crashes with Inquisition. I'd first suggest you do a system file scan, which will check if there are errors with important OS files and hopefully fix them. You will want to close unnecessary programs such as your web browser, media player, Origin, etc. before starting. You might want to create a restore point before doing anything like this, just in case.

First, you will need to launch command prompt (cmd.exe) as an administrator. Unsure about Windows 10, but in Windows 7 you can find command prompt in Accessories, or by searching for cmd in the start menu search bar. Right click and choose 'run as administrator'.

In command prompt, type " sfc /scannow". Let it run (it may take a few minutes), once finished it should tell you that it either found no errors, it found errors and fixed them, or it found errors but was unable to fix all (or any) of them.

If it fixed errors or didn't find any, restart your computer, and do it again. If it finds and fixes errors again, keep restarting and running sfc until it comes back with no errors found, would be best if you get the 'no errors found' response twice (after rebooting... so in order you would reboot, run sfc, find no errors, reboot, run sfc, find no errors, yay).

If it found errors but couldn't fix them, or found no errors, or you've completed the step above after finding & fixing errors, you should also run DISM (this can only be done on Windows 8 & up, you have Windows 10 so I assume you can use it).

Once again in the command prompt (as an administrator), type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" (be sure to include the spaces). This could take around half an hour (or less, maybe more). Once that's finished, reboot and run sfc /scannow again, just to be sure.

Sorry if that's all nonsensical or badly worded, words are being a problem for me at the moment. 😳

Anyway, after doing all that, try playing the game, see if you still get issues.

One other thing that's probably nothing, but it'll bug me if I don't ask... is your monitor plugged into your video card or your motherboard? Just wondering.

@ColdSnowLight Please include a dxdiag. 🙂 (A brief overview of your hardware, without even mentioning what version of Windows you're running, isn't all that useful for trying to determine what's going wrong). 'Changed stuff on the GeForce experience etc' does not really give us an idea of what you've tried to fix your problem. Do these problems happen in single player, or only multiplayer? Do you get the same error message as the OP about video card drivers? Your second post suggests you have different issues entirely.

This sticky explains how to generate and post a dxdiag and what information will be useful to include when you ask for help. 😉

Also, do not follow the steps I've suggested for RhinoMan, as you don't necessarily have the same problem.

  • Hi David,

The crashes are very random.  Sometimes they even occur at or before the EA/Bioware logos display on boot, sometimes in the opening menu, sometimes as soon as 10 seconds into gameplay, sometimes 20 minutes.  The most common error is "display driver stopped responding...".  After amending the registry to with TdrDelay, I would then get "application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" followed by "display driver stopped responding...".

I have updated GeForce drivers to latest with clean install, Intel drivers to latest, DirectX version is 11.3, Visual C++ redistributable, re-installed DA:I (with and without patches), graphics are set to low.

@Rhinoman80 Hey, can you post a link to your dxdiag, perhaps we can help.

     Yes, this is very important.

Is that the full error message?

Which Intel drivers did you install? CPUs don't need drivers and since you have an Nvidia GPU, you don't need drivers for Intel graphics.

  • I just tried updating everything I could think of or saw mentioned on message boards.  The whole message is "display driver stopped responding and has recovered".  DxDiag is attached.

    Cheers.

@Rhinoman80 Until recently I had the same GPU as you (I even have the same CPU, though I have integrated graphics disabled in BIOS), and it was prone to overheating, otherwise I had no issues with the game (other than mod related ones 😛 ). Made the game impossible to play on hot days, as it would CTD randomly. So you might want to try checking your PC for dust, monitoring the temperature of your GPU using something like HWMonitor (it's free and monitors the temperature of multiple components, including CPU and GPU) and make sure your PC is well ventilated.

Must say, now that summer's ended, I kind of miss that GPU... It made a great heater 😛

  • @Leora85 Good tip, thanks.  The highest the temp has gotten to is 62 degrees C, which doesn't seem that hot, and it still crashes randomly.  GPU/CPU well-ventilated and just got a seeing too with a spray duster, so hopefully no issue there.

I have just the same problems, the game just crash randomly on multiplayer.

and it seems like im not the only one, alot of ppl i speak with on multiplayer have just the same problem.

It just crash randomly, and even some times make buggs that make you teleport or even fall through the ground etc.

I also get a Gpu on 60C to jumping up to 80C, i have a good processor a very good grafic card and mothercard.

i even have water cooler Kraken, but still the game bugg and crash alot.

I dont have this problem on Elder scrolls online Starcraft Guild wars 2 or any other games tbh, it´s only dragon age.

processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820K and grafic card NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980 Ti Mothercard ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1, Socket 2011-3.

So now i wonder is there a code wrong in the game or system, since i cant even play the game with a close 4000 euro pc?

and this problems never end, i been trying to fix by doing updates, fixed new bios fixed new updates for grafic card fixed and repaired the game, changed stuff on the Gerforce exp etc.

Youtube and google search and nothing works :S, and it´s a shame ( Since EA and dragon age is a very good game)

but this endless crashing and bugging just make me wanna unistall the game, or make a Video put it on youtube about this problems and what really should be added or fixed on dragon age.

Since nothing is happening and, it´s just a huge shame that EA isent doing anything at all :S.

    And why is that?

Anyway any info, any info at all that can fix this crash bugg crash kick you out of the game problem i be very happy.

A ps i payed 150 euro for a dragon age inquisition collection, and dosent even work. :S how sad isent that ☹️?

And ps on that i payed for bars on the multiplayer, even more sad ☹️.

    and it´s so many......

Constant crashes and graphical glitches, why even put out a game that dosen´t work?

    I Mean it´s just a shame  ☹️    ☹️    ☹️    it´s a big shame!

Thank you for you´re time and info and comments.
