DLC for Dragon Age II - Black Emporium and Exiled Prince not working

I'm not holding out a lot of hope for this, but I'm at my wits end.

I recently bought Dragon Age II, which came with the Black Emporium DLC. I'm not too fussed about the Emporium itself, to be honest, but I was really looking forward to the dog! I also bought The Exiled Prince, as I had heard about Sebastion and it sounded fun.

Both downloaded fine and seemed to be installed. They are listed as installed within the game itself, and in Origin (although they are also called 'unathorized' in the game). But they don't play. I get no letters in Hawke's house, there's no dog, no Sebastion, no new places to go or things to do. Reading up online it seemed like a lot of people have had this problem, so I tried suggestions found on various forums.

I have checked i have the latest patch (1.04).

I have made sure I am playing whilst logged into both Origin and the Bioware social site.

I have made sure that I am logged into both Origin and the Bioware social site with the same email address.

I tried live-chatting with the help service - that's an hour of my life I will never get back! After I explained the issue I tried repairing the install. Nothing changed, so the help service told me to download a PC cleaner (???!!!), which seemed HIGHLY dubious advice, but it was the official help centre and I really wanted to get this sorted, so I did as instructed, which required exiting Firefox and losing the live chat - I confirmed with the adviser whether I should allow the programme to do this and he said yes and that afterwards my game would definitely be fixed, so I wouldn't need his help. It wasn't. I am pretty sure he told me to do it just to exit the chat, tbh. He's now closed the issue as resolved. I couldn't be more annoyed, but I'm not going to go through talking to them again. They're clearly clueless about how to resolve it.

I've tried redownloading the DLC (through the social site, rather than Origin this time), but they won't install as it says I haven't got DA2 installed (when I clearly do). I have tried various suggested fixes for THIS issue. Such as making sure the install folders are located within the DA2 folders and having the game already open when trying to install. It's having none of it. If the game is already open it says I can't install because the game is open. If I close the game, it says the game doesn't exist.

I'm at my wits end. I want the DLC I've paid for. I want my dog. I want Sebastion.

Is there anything else I can do?

Would it help to completely uninstall and reinstall the game? If so, how can I do this without losing my current characters?

OK, in case this is of help to others, I think I have fixed it.

I had to uninstall the wole thing. I backed up my characters first (copy the folder C:\Users\HP\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age 2\Characters and paste to your desktop), then uninstalled using the Windows Add/remove programs function. Then, making sure I was logged into both Origin and the Bioware social site, I redownloaded and installed the game from Origin (which downloads and installs your addins as well). Still logged into both I opened to play for the first time and went directly to Downloadable Content in the menu before doing anything else. I got a prompt to log in, and I logged in using my Bioware social site details.

My DLCs were there, and where before they had said 'unauthorised', they now say 'version 1.0'.

The live chat help guy explicitly said I wouldn't have to uninstall and reinstall, but this seems to be the only way to do it.

Uninstalling DOES lose your characters. I'm hoping that pasting them back into the same location they came from (note, this is NOT the same location as the rest of your game files (see above), which are saved in Program Files automatically) will restore them, but if they're gone, they're gone. I have played teh game through once, but as I'd wanted to play it through with these DLCs I don't mind doing it all again.

IT WORKED. My characters are there, and I was able to go back to my 15th save to play my first character again with all my premium content showing up as quests.
