Dragon Age 2 won't start anymore. [WINDOWS 7]

Two days ago, I decided to play Dragon Age 2 again since I've been playing Dragon Age; Origins, but when I hit the play button, it doesn't start.

I installed the game round about last year, if not longer and it worked fine, no problems at all, but now it suddenly won't work.

Ive tried everything I can think of.

  1. Uninstalled and Reinstalled about five time.
  2. Ran as admin/changed compatibiltiy.
  3. Updated Drivers/DirectX/.NET Framework
  4. Ran in DirectX9 instead of DirectX11 with low setting.
  5. Bi-Pass the launcher.
  6. Created a new admin account and installed the game on that account
  7. Turned off Virus Protection/UAC and installed.
  8. Updated the patch

Nothing seem to work, and it worked fine before. I was even able to add mods to the game and it was fine with them.

It is a disc copy I have and it has no DLC apart from The Black Emporium and The Mabari Hound.

If someone could help me with this, it would make my day :D

Thank you

  • You gave lots of useful information, (thanks for that) but not the most important...  What happens?!?

Do you start from a desktop shortcut?  (If so, is it mapped to the game .exe, or the Launcher?)

Do you see the splash screen? (Which then disappears when you click "Play"?)

Do you get an error message? (If so, what?)

Does it crash to the desktop?  (If so, when?)

    Does it freeze? (ditto)

    Does it do absolutely nothing?

  • Oh sorry, I knew I forgot something when I was asking my question.

I started the game with using the desktop shortcut and when that didn't work, I started it from the disc itselfs.

Both times the splash screen appears and that works fine, I can change my setting and other things without there being a problem, but when I hit the "PLAY" button, the splash screen disappears and the egg timer appears on my curser, but then it stops and nothing happens.

I even started up my Task Manager to monitor it on there but when I click "PLAY" and look at the Task Manager, the game name appears then disappears.

I don't get an error message or anything, it just disappears and then nothing happens.

    Hope this helped 🙂

Ok, I have, and have installed, both the DA2(SE) retail disc and the EA/Origin digital download versions, on Win7/64-bit and on Win8 Pro/64-bit.  (On the Win8 rig have the downloaded version only.)

Never had this behaviour with DA2, although I did experience it with the downloaded version of ME1.  The fix for ME1 on my rig was to edit the properties of the EA/Origin program to "Run as Administrator".

I've heard that for some the fix (again for ME1) was to edit either the Launcher, or the game .exe itself, (can't remember which) to run in "WinXP (SP3) Compatibility Mode".  I've also heard people say that allowing the Launcher (or the game .exe) to "Run as Administrator" worked for them.

Since the first method worked for me, I didn't have to try the others..

  • I have tried running both the Launcher and DragonAge2.exe in both "Run as Administrator" and "WinXP (SP3) Compatability Mode" but nothing changes.

My operating system is WIN7/32-Bit but that shouldn't make it not work as I can have all the ME games working and Dragon Age Ultimate Edition working perfectly fine.

If the game just "disappears" at the loading screen, try to launch the game in windowed mode or try a different screen resolution. Sometimes that helps get back in game.

Try to go in "DragonAge2Config" the application in the folder where do you install the game and setting the directx 9 (not 11! they dosen't work!).

Start the game in Windowed mode and  run as administrator
