Dragon Age Inquisition Crashes

So, I'm currently at the battle with Alexius and the moment he spawns the first rift my game instantly crashes and I can't progress anymore. I've tried every solution I can think of: hard reboot, clearing persistent storage, etc. What else can I do?

Obviously, you have no idea at all what a Radeon 9200 really is, or even AGP.   You couldn't possibly have either of those, really.  Re-read what I told you about it.  Here is a review dating back into the dark ages when it was hammered out with the flint tools of the cavemen working for Sapphire at the time:

It is actually thirteen years now since that was released.  Compare what your GPU looks like to the ancient etchings included with the review scroll.

(And here is the AGP to PCIe physical appearance difference):

  • Yes, I really don't understand computer stuff, so linking me to sites that compare cards and use a lot of tech jargon isn't very useful for me.   But question and answer sites where people ask questions and are answered in plain layman's terms is.

Basically this video card is older than dirt and was a pretty bad one when it was released is what I'm getting from what I read.  And I should be grateful it plays the game competently at all.  I was just wondering what happened--if anything--to make it suddenly start playing whacko on me when, until recently, it played the game well, even on high settings.  And what--if anything--could be done to help it, aside from lowering my graphic settings and/or buying another card altogether.  Gonna just suck it up and play as best I can and move on.

Thanks for your assistance and patience with me in this matter.

I think we won't be able to help you unless you post a dxdiag report. Here are the instructions:

    1.  Press and hold the Windows key and the letter R on your keyboard
    2.  You will see a Run box in the lower-left corner of your screen
    3.  Type dxdiag in the text field
    4.  Click OK
    5.  If the option exists, click the button Run 64-bit DXDIAG (see screenshot below)

    6.  Click the Save All Information button, found on the bottom of the DXDIAG report
    7.  Save this text file to your Desktop if possible
    8. Open the text file, select all the text inside (Ctrl + A) and copy it (Ctrl +C).
    9. Go to http://hastebin.com/, paste the contents of your DXDiag inside (Ctrl+V) and click Save on the webpage (Ctrl+S).
    10. Copy the link of the page in your post.

  • Wow!  Thank you, Fred_vdp, that was interesting and incredibly helpful to me.  I didn't know I could do all that with my PC!  Please, if you could check the link here and let me know what, if anything, I can do to improve performance (aside from spending a lot of money).  If I knew how to assemble and set up a PC, I'd do that but I can't.  I have to rely on a shop to build me one, and that's a bit out of my budget at the moment.  I realize a lot of the parts may be outdated and either not available or unupgradeable at this time.  My PC was made in 2010 as an improvement over the dinosaur I had from before dated around 2000.

Anyway, again, thanks for your help, and your patience with me.

Ok, that's definitely not a Radeon 9200, but instead the much more recent R9 200 series. That explains how you could play the game before. 😉

The display drivers seem a bit old.

    9/15/2014

That's older than the game itself. You should really download and install the latest version.

First uninstall the current graphics drivers entirely. To do that, go to the Windows Control Panel and click 'uninstall a program'. Then delete all software by AMD. Then restart the PC.

Next, download and install driver 15.7.1: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+7+-+64

(Ignore beta driver 15.9, as it contains a serious memory leak.)

Edit: Beta driver 15.9.1 fixed the memory leak.

  • Thank you, so much for your help Fred_vdp!  Many tasty internet cookies I'd bake for you if I could.  I have installed the new drivers and I'll be attempting to play my game later today.  For now, going to go watch Hotel Transylvania with my kids.  I'll let  you know how the game runs.

You saved me so much headache, I was kind of upset thinking the shop had played switcheroo and sold me a very old, very bad video card when I got the new one specifically to play Inquisition (my old one was a 4 thousand-something or other).  Glad to see they hooked me up with something not so ancient, but still compatible with my 2010 computer.

*Edit* A little early to tell but installing new drivers seems to have helped the issue I think.  Thanks, Fred_vdp!
