Tried the "delete directx .cab" workaround, the repair tip and the administrator execution, nothing worked.
Right now, I just applied compatibility settings for Windows 7 (since I'm using 8.1), and the game finally started running. Someone there is a really frustrated/retro guy over Windows 8. ;-)

Hmm I'm using windows 8.1 too so taht might do the trick for me as well... How do you change the compatibility settings?

same problem
GTX 690 - 347.09 - Win7 x64 - 32GB RAM (the game doesn't ever use more than 2.5 GB RAM anyways)
it starts then it crashes
load it again then it crashes
load it again then it crashes yet again
load it yet again, then it might or might not crash
if it doesn't crash, then it works fine until i exit the game.
but the next time i try to play, it's the same thing all over again
