Dragon Age Inquisition lagging and freezing, bad audio

I  have been playing DA:I on the same laptop for a few years now, just this year i did the update from Origin to EA Play. At first I was playing with no issues again- 124 hrs into the game and now when I start the game, everything works ok for the first few moments but then the game starts to lag and freeze and the audio gets really bad static over it.

I can play any other game via the EA app with  zero problems but Inquisition is the only one I want to play.

I have monitired my cpu and closed anything operting in the backgrund during game play, stopped ea bakground services, made sure all drivers were up to date AND removed/reinstalled both the app and the game.... nothing helps!

    Do you use Mods?
Did you checked the task manager for other applications that cause high loads?

Please create a DxDiag in text file format and post it with your next reply. You can do that with the "Choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

  • Hey, thanks for answering my call for help! I am using no mods, and I did monitor my cpu while playing the game. Nothing of note happening there, just EA and DAI active and DAI will sometimes go up to 50%.

I attached my dxdiag here. I did just have a bunch of repairs done to the pc a year or so ago but I played at least 25 hours of DAI with it since then and never had any issues. This only just started happening.

At first I thought it was an issue caused by hooking up wiith HDMI to my TV but I took all of that out of the equation too and still have all the same issues.

The AppHangB1 error in your DxDiag is often driver related and the driver of your GTX 970 is very old, so lets start there.

    • Download the newest driver for your GTX970 from NVIDIA
    • Follow this manual to the letter to cleanly uninstall all NVIDIA components.
    • Install the graphics driver > Go online.
    • Test.
  • Ok so that has definitely improved the things, but we are still experiencing a lot of lagging and freezing when moving around. The sound is still getting static also, but is working better overall. I'd say since updating the graphics driver the situation has improved by about 50%?

Still having to wait quite a bit while the game seems to catch up though. So not quite playable at this point.

In laptops, the dedicated GPU and the CPUs graphic APU work together.

So I would suggest to renew the graphic driver for the Intel GPU as well.

You can find the driver here on this intel page.

Make also sure that your games run on the NVIDIA GPU and not on the Intel GPU.

    • Open the NVIDIA Control Panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings.
    • Go to the ab "Program Settings" Tab > Search for "Dragon Age Inquisition" in the first drop down menu.
    • Go to: "Select the preferred graphics processor for this program" > Select the NVIDIA High Performance Graphicprocessor > Apply.

If this setting is missing look at this guide.

  • I can't thank you enough for all of your help!

At this point I'd say we are about 75% better? I was able to do a bit of moving around, but there is still a lot of lagging when talking to characters and at the inquisition table. I can actually move around now though and that's something! I haven't dared to try any thing further.

Any suggestions on what can be done next? I find it interesting that when I check in on the Intel website, Microsoft Etc everything says my drivers are up to date but they're very clearly not 😅

MS will only provide new drivers if the manufacture of your device allows it.

Closing all background applications you don't need wile playing.

Other than that, it's hard to say because I don't know much about your system.
Systems bloat over time if your OS is a few years old a fresh installation of Windows might help. (Make sure you get the newest possible drivers from the manufactures website.)

I wanted to follow up on this thread to see if you're still experiencing issues with the game. If you need any further assistance, please let us know!

    Thanks!

  • Hi there, thank you so much for following up. While things are working a lot better and I'm able to move around in game I am still experiencing the same problems as before.

I am guaranteed issues if I go to the war table. It's an automatic tell when the game will lag because the sound will start getting static through the speakers, and then the game will lag really badly. Eventually it seems to catch up with itself and goes back to normal but it always ends up doing it again a little bit later.

Definitely a huge Improvement since updating my drivers, but I am fairly certain that when my laptop was at the repair place, Microsoft was reinstalled only last year and I barely used the laptop since then so I don't think it should be bloated. By barely used I mean I've literally played Dragon Age Inquisition on a handful of times and that is all. It played perfectly fine until just recently.

I usually play with my Xbox controller connected to a USB port on the pc, I tried without to see if it was causing the issue but I still experience some lag. I'm just about to hook it up again to see if there's a difference.

I took a small clip of video with my phone while playing, not sure if it's at all helpful but if it is let me know and I can share it with you.
