They should only reset if your character walks (or jumps or whatever) back over a square you've already walked over, are you absolutely sure this isn't happening? Sometimes people on lower end systems can get lag which can cause this to happen (or cause their character to move in unusual ways, sometimes resulting in tiles you've walked over to not light up). I've played this section on multiple characters throughout the life of the game (and its myriad patches), and have never had an issue, other than occasionally bouncing off a companion/Morrigan accidentally, which can be annoying.
I'd suggest telling your companions to hold somewhere out of the way (so you only have to put up with Morrigan), then doing the puzzles very slowly and carefully, see if that makes any difference.
(By the way, these boards are EA, not Bioware, and are intended for players to help each other out, not as a source of official technical support 😉 )

In my experience, telling your companions to hold position is more problematic than ignoring them. If you don't give them any commands, they shouldn't be able to overwrite your tiles in the Q-bert minigame.

They don't overwrite your tiles, but they can sometimes get in the way and push your character back on a tile you didn't intend to stand on (and with some of the weird bouncing issues on some lower end systems, you can travel quite far when your companions push you, especially if there's a drop or cliff nearby 😛 ). I generally don't have trouble getting them to hold, as long as I don't stray too far, and remember to clear commands when I'm done. I mostly suggested it so Carmen could be sure this wasn't the cause of the problem.
