Actually, I completed this DLC with Cassandra (Weapon+Shield, Vanguard), Dorian (mostly Spirit+Storm) and Sera (Archery+a mix of Sabotage and Subterfuge) and Weapon+Shield & Vanguard Inquisitor, with party on levels 24-25 near the end of DLC on Hard difficulty. It really isn't that bad as long as you taunt the heck out of enemies with your Warriors and deal damage from the range (I usually switched to Sera during the fight). Also, remember that you can change difficulty level during the fight...

About shards, haven't you actually used some of them up in Forbidden Oasis by any chance? Grand total of shards is not enough to fully open all 3 Oasis pathways and the door in Jaws of Hakkon.

Actually, you can open all three paths in Forbidden Oasis and the one in JoH. Collecting all the shards without the JoH expansion open up every door in each path. JoH has enough shards by itself to open the door in the Frostback Basin. Check your collections list to make sure you have all the shards (there are 100 without JoH).
