Is even your mage not doing damage? With the warriors, the enemies could have high armor, so their damage may not be high enough to penetrate the armor, or doing like 1 point minimum damage. But mage attacks ignore armor, so they should be unaffected. Note abilities just multiple damage on top of what you do for your base amount. So if your base damage after armor is 1, then 300% of 1 is only 3. A rogue can help here because they have attacks that sunder (reduce) armor.
Also, by "few abilities work" do you mean the animation won't even start, or they just aren't doing damage? If the latter, see above.
As for why you are dying quickly, what difficulty are you playing? Also, double check the enemy levels in tactical camera mode an see if they are actually above your level. If so, they get a damage bonus and can wipe your team very fast. Trolls are notorious for this. They can one shot you even if they are only a couple levels above you.
