Game Crashes and Hard Drive Disappears

Everything works perfectly fine until right after the first boss fight.  Before I make it to the next cutscene, the game closes to the desktop and my hard drive "disappears".  The computer no longer detects it. My system more than meets the minimum requirements.to play, and this is the only game with which I'm having any problems.  It's a brand new hard drive and also a brand new video card (R9 280).  Very frustrating.

I've had this issue in the past after installing a hard drive. it is probably a faulty sata cable, also try another motherboard sata port.

  • A failing SSD with firmware bug does this too, but it disappears from BIOS as well, and if windows is installed on it, would cause bluescreens.

A new SATA cable and port was the very first thing we tried; no luck.  And we're not getting any blue screens or error messages of any kind.  Just to make sure the save data wasn't corrupt or something, my husband started a new game - he didn't even make it through the first cutscene before this happened.  Every other game I've tried works perfectly fine as well.

These can be difficult to pin down. Here are a few more suggestions.

-If you have the choice, plug the hard drive into a different colour sata port. Using a different sata controller may eliminate a compatilbily issue.

-Try disabling the hard drive 'turn off' option in windows advanced power options.

-If you have two hard drives switch the motherboard ports around and see if the other hard drive disappears instead.

-Check for a hard drive firmware update, and a motherboard bios update.

    Good luck

Just a couple of after thoughts. As Herethos says it could be psu related. Make sure you have enough watts on your 12v rail, as that could cause a component to disconnect. Especially since you likely added a higher power requirement video card. It might also be worth checking your system temps, recommend HWmonitor, http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
