Game play goes into slow motion on PS3.

Has anyone ahd the problem where for the longest time the game was running fine ( I agree theres some graphical problems but I can get past that as long as gameplay is fine) but after a while I started to encounter small problems in the gameplay where as the game would almost freeze up and everything just starts to go in slow motion. Meaning it takes about 5 seconds to take on foot step. I had progressed to getting past the Skyhold so I was alright for a fair amount of time. But now when I load up from my save profiles its all the same theyre just crashed and in slow motion making the game completely unplayable. I payed 80 dollars for a brand new highly anticipated game, EA and Bioware should hopefully be working hard to fix this and not ignore the Last Gen console players as I very much like the game and want this to be fixed. Any thoughts anyone?

Glad I googled this. I was about to get rid of the game but saw this post. It was the same spot the Forbidden Oasis he as ding to the lone rift. Fast tracking to Haven still fixes.

  • Yes, this just happen to me, while wandering through the forbidden oasis.  The entire game began to move in slow motion (as the previous person said, it was taking 5 seconds to make one step, but the drawing is smooth -- not like frame lag or skipping).  It even seemed to ignore button presses if, say, I tried to press Start before letting the five second step forward action complete). Not sure what triggered it though, as I was just wandering around (though I did look through the Oculum just prior to it happening).  I quit and reloaded that same game and it still happened.  So I shut down the PS3 and tried again.  Loading that same save always comes back in slow motion.  However, a save of the same game from 8 minutes earlier, when it wasn't happening, loaded and was just fine.

So my advice until they fix this is to save often so you don't lose progress.  But it's clearly a bug.

  • This just happened again, but I tried various things to see if I could get it to work again.  Some things run at normal speed (such as targetting the location of a spell), and the sound effects.  In any case, I was able to get the engine to start running at normal speed again by going to the World map and traveling to Haven.  That forced a full level load off disk, which I think was key.  When Haven drew everything worked normally again.  So this might be a way to work around the issue: travel somewhere that will guarantee that it flushes the current level and loads one off disk.

My guess is this is some sort of memory leak, and the engine is "stretching" game time and throttling the frame rate to keep the drawing smooth and avoid frame skipping.  At least, forcing it to unload the level where it happens and load a different one is consistent with that (simply travelling to a different location where it didn't need to do a load didn't make the problem go away).

Hope this works for anyone else that ends up in this situation.

  • Same here in forbidden oasis. I travelled left to the rift that I had to go down a circular boarded stairway to get to. After taking out the rift, I went down a tunnel where the exit deadends with a boarded up wall that blocks the exit. Right when I picked up some loot it started to have that extreme low frame rate issue. I was able to save that point. But, after exiting to menu and loading that saved game it still had the low frame rate. I even turned off the system and went back to that saved game and the problem remained.

As mentioned above and without trying loading an old save so I would not lose my progress, I travelled back to haven and the frame rate problem fixed itself for me. I went back to the oasis and it the frame rate was normal. I have a feeling I'll see it again though.

  • I have the disc copy (not digital) and have encountered the same problem. I actually thought it was my ps3 since it is old. Than I decided to google it and to my surprise, I wasn't the only one.. Good thing I researched it BC I was about to deep six my ps3...lol

    Hi @AbC1895a2683502

Thanks for confirming that fast travelling to Haven still fixes this issue!

I'm marking your answer as the accepted solution so it will be easier to find for other players, who might need this workaround 🙂
