Open a locked door? I have yet to figure out how to open a locked door? Is there some kind of trick to it? Do I have to purchase something somewhere? I've found a number of houses with locked doors, but can't figure out how to open any of them.

There is a Inquisition Perk called Deft Hands or something like that under the Secrets area.
Takes 4 points in Secrets to unlock this so will be a while before you get there as most of the first points should go to inventory and potion enlargement (in my opinion)
Any rogue in your party can open locked doors, unless they have a masterwork lock on them. If that's the case, you need to unlock an inquisition perk under the 'secrets' tab which will allow you to open those. You'll need a total of 6 points there to do it.
4 points actually ...and getting an agent to join your inquisition counts towards this if the agent ends up under Leliana's leadership so really it won't take that long to get the perk Deft Hands. Pretty sure I got this skill unlocked by the time I got to Skyhold
