Is It Safe To Move Saved Games From Drive To Drive?

First Of all, please excuse me if my post may not be in the correct section. I'm not sure if it should be here, or in General Discussions.

I don't know if forum moderators can move posts around on here. Nevertheless, I'm sorry if it may be the wrong section.

So anyway, here's my question.

I just purchased a new Solid State Drive for my PC. I'm already half way through playing DAI.

But I'm planning on using the new SSD to move DAI and all of my saved games onto it.

Beforehand, I am aware that I'll need to reinstall Windows while in the the process of installing my new SSD.

So as usual, with Windows installed on Drive C, (a regular hard drive) this is the Hard Drive I currently have DAI and all my saved games on

I have a separate Hard Drive ("D") where I want to move all the saved game files to, (from my C Drive) just temporarily while I get my new SSD installed.

Then, when it's all finished and installed, I shall then want to reinstall DAI, then move all of the saved game files from my D Drive, and put them all in the correct saved game folder for DAI, all on my new Solid State Drive.

This is what I have planned in the next days.

Before I do all this however, I decided to come here to get a bit of advice first.

I would like to know please, is it safe enough to move my DAI saved game files around from drive to drive without any worry of anything bad happening to them?

i.e. they won't get corrupted in any way?

I would absolutely HATE... to start the game all over again if anything bad happened. This would be extremely annoying, and I would be extremely disappointed too. :-/

Anyway, I just wanted to ask for advice on this here, before I go ahead and start this process.

If all will be okay, then I'll go ahead and start.

  • @MissTuliptus It's perfectly safe to move your DAI save files, in fact I recommend backing them up every now again (make copies of them to save somewhere else) just in case you get a bug or glitch that causes you to lose them (it happens, especially with cloud saving enabled 😉 ). Just remember to put them back in [user] > Documents > Bioware > Dragon Age Inquisition > Save (or just copy the entire save folder) when you're ready to play again. 🙂

As DarkAmaranth said, you can also save yourself from redownloading the entire game by following the directions in the article she linked to. Handy if you have a download limit or slow internet 🙂

  • Thanks a lot for the reply.

DarkAmaranth1966, I'm not sure if you completely understood what I was saying.
When I said I wanted to move my saved games from drive to drive, I actually meant the SAVED GAME FILES themselves when you make a save from WITHIN the actual game.
I mean the actual SAVED GAME FILES themselves. And they are currently installed inside a DAI game folder, on my C Drive.

I want to move all of those Saved Game Files..... FROM.... that folder on my C Drive, to a temporary folder on my D Drive, while I get my new SSD installed.
Then, once everything is finished and reinstalled, (new SSD and DAI onto the new SSD) I THEN.... want to move my DAI saved Game Files.... FROM my D Drive, TO... the new SSD, into the correct game folder itself.

I don't know if I have tried to explain this clear enough or not.

Anyway, I do find the instructions in your link a bit too complicated to understand I'm afraid.
So if it's still okay to move my Saved Game Files, I'd just like to do a very simple "cut" of the game folder they're currently sitting in, then Paste that folder.... TO..... my D Drive temporarily while I get my new SSD sorted out.

As for the actual DAI Game itself - (since I don't quite understand things in the link you provided) well I think it's going to be more simpler for me to just re-install Origin later, (onto my new SSD) login with my account info, and then just re-download the game again, then move my Saved Game Files onto it, from my D Drive.... TO.... my new SSD (using the simple cut + paste method) where my DAI Game will be installed, and the Saved Game Files will go into the correct DAI Game Folder, and hopefully still work from there.

Can someone please tell me, will I still have the possibility of things working out okay this way?

@MissTuliptus If my post was unclear (I am having a bad brain day, so it's quite likely), what you're describing is perfectly fine. 🙂 Files should not get corrupted by simply moving them around your computer unless something is very wrong. 😉
