Patch 2 Graphics Work Around (TESTED)

Mod edit: The workaround below is outdated. A patch made shader quality a separate setting. In order to get rid of wrinkly face textures or fix the lack of scars, increase the shader quality in the graphics options. - Fred_vdp

Original message:

Hey guys here's a work around I found tucked away in a post from a Bioware rep in the feedback forums, it almost got lost in the cacophony coming from other posters. I tried it and after the patch my mage is back to her badass self, scars and all. Keep in mind I didn't have the "aging" issue that some people were reporting, so I don't know if this fixes that, but my hair is no longer made of wax and I have scars again. Good luck everyone, hope this works.

POST FROM BIOWARE:

Hey Everyone,

We're working on getting a hot fix out for the PC graphics issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, here is a workaround you can try:

To start, make sure the quality setting you choose is equal to the setting set for Mesh Quality inside Options>Graphics

You will need to add a new command line parameter. To do this:

Through Origin:
Right click on the Dragon Age Inquisition title
Go to game properties
Type the command line parameter in the Command Line Properties box.

Through shortcut:
Right Click Shortcut
Go to Properties

Under target go to the end of the field and type the command line parameter into the box
Once there, add the following command line parameter: -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel <quality setting>

In this instance, <quality setting> should be one of the following:

Ultra
High
Medium
Low

An example of how to set your quality to high would be: -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel High

Please note that once the hot fix is out, you will need to go back in and remove this workaround from your command line.

It’s also important to note that pre-patch 2, all users on PC were being forced to use the Ultra shader quality. This means that those of you playing on lower settings will notice a decrease in quality, particularly players using low or medium settings.
To achieve the same visuals as pre-patch, users on lower settings will need to change their settings to Ultra, which should likewise be used in conjunction with Ultra mesh quality. Mismatching the mesh and shader settings will result in other visual artifacts like overly shiny hair.
Please be aware that changing settings to Ultra may impact performance on some machines.

Sorry about any frustration this may have caused.

  • Thanks, I'm not one for bumping in general but more eyes on this workaround will be useful. I can't mark original posts as a solution, so I'll mark this one and mirror the post.

  • Thanks for the workaround. Works perfectly fine for me. Set mine to ultra since obviously that's the way I used to play (unknowlingly). :D

This sorta works but not 100% on non High End PCs I guess?

I'm running the game with a mix of High and Medium settings. Pre patch I had relatively stable FPS. Post patch I have some stuttering.

If I add the command line -ShaderSystem.ShaderQualityLevel High (high to match the meshes, cause anything below will result in shiny hair), the stuttering gets extremely worse. But the shiny hair is gone. Everything looks better, in fact. But it's too much for my hamster-powered rig.

So yes, this is a workaround, but only temporarily. Pre patch I could run with the same settings (minus the shader command line), no shiny hair, scars and complexions were there and it didn't stutter. Now it's just a mess ☹️

Did you set the command line and the video options 'Mesh Quality' both to 'Low'? I am under the impression, from the hofix patch notes, they both need to be set to 'Medium' or higher.
