@Fred_vdp wrote:Have you tried deleting the file ProfileOptions_profile in your save folder?
I haven't yet, mainly because I don't know what the significance of the file is, and didn't consider deleting it before. Could I ask what the file does (and of how much importance it is) before I delete it? Like, just to be safe and all. Should I ensure it's backed up somewhere before deleting it, will the game create a new one if it starts up at all?- Anonymous9 years ago
Hi
Can u send me useful link to download directx 10.0 or 11, please
- Anonymous9 years ago
@montaron35 That is now done via Windows Updates. See this article from Microsoft.
Hi guys, it's me again! XD
So, I haven't played in a while, and when I started again, my game crashes and turns off my computer. I know that my computer is generally too old for the game to work on, but it has worked so far. I also know that this issue isn't related to the thread per say, but I can still try.I suspect that it might be overheating for some reason. Now, I am not a tech, so I will have little to no idea when you start talking about checking this and that - just tell me where I can do it, and it'll be fine. 🙂

@ZetsuAiPlays I'ts not just that your computer is a bit old it's that it is well, well below what is required to run the game (that you managed to get it to run at all is somewhat amazing). Just because your computer has been handling the game so far, it won't continue to indefinitely. By forcing your computer to run something beyond its capabilities you can (and most likely will) wear out/damage your hardware. It's very likely that your computer will get to the stage (if it isn't already) where it can't run the game anymore, or where it just carks it entirely.
The damage (if there is any) can also mess up your hard drives, as they are somewhat prone to being affected by damage to other components in my experience. If you have anything on your harddrive you want to keep, I highly suggest backing it up on external storage.
If you're determined to continue playing on that computer, and it's overheating (if you're not sure if it's overheating, I suggest using something like HWmonitor (it's what I use. You want the free version, not pro) to check), usually the first thing to check for is dust.
As your computer is a laptop, you'll also want to make sure you're playing somewhere well ventilated, and not with the computer on your lap (despite the name, having a computer on your lap really isn't great for it, unless perhaps if you use a lapdesk, preferably one with fans).
Is the game crashing immediately, or after playing for a while? If the latter, it does sound similar to my experience with overheating (though in my case the game just crashed to desktop, it didn't cause my whole computer to turn off). For me, it was a combination of a video card prone to overheating and the external temperature (it was summer. In Australia. Really hot, in other words 😛 ). There wasn't really anything I could do other than not play when it was hot. Eventually I ended up replacing my GPU (now that it's winter I really miss my old one, it was a great heater 😛 ), as the overheating really wasn't good for it or my computer.
If you're still having issues and would like more help, perhaps it might be best if you start a new thread, with a new dxdiag and a full rundown of what you've done, what's worked, etc. Might make things a bit easier to keep track of. 🙂
Yes! That worked.
This happened to me before and and I knew it was alot easier to fix than uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, and playing around with a clean boot.
I also added DA:I as an an exception in AVG, Options, Advanced Settings, Exceptions, then chose application/file, found the .exe for DA:I (C: Program files, origin games, Dragon Age Inquisition)
I disable origin in game: for the newest (2017) version of origin: Origin, application settings, more.
I updated the Patch package. in (C/ programs,/origin games,/dragon age inquisition/update) by adding 1 to whatever it said. so 10 becomes 11, 12 becomes 13.. etc)
I am making sure my graphics software is up-to-date now, but it looks like deleting the ProfileOptions_profile files worked.
Just so everyone knows, My game would open to a black screen and then immediately crash to the desktop, and I am still on Win7,

@utahelf Thanks for sharing. 🙂 Please note, you should only ever need to alter the package.mft version number (the file you altered in Update > Patch) if you've been using mods and have taken them out, as trying to load a save with a higher version number won't work. It should have no impact on crashing etc.
Most likely it was AVG causing your CTD, and adding the exception to it is what fixed your issue. Glad you got the game working. 🙂

Help! Have a brand new laptop with Windows 10. Installed Steam and Origin in it. No problem with Steam games, but I can't open my brand new copy of Dragon Age Inquisition: Game of the Year. A black window pops up, it then tries to go into fullscreen mode and promptly closes. No error message.
I have:
1-) Erased the Patch file contents.
2-) Repaired the game files.
3-) Upgraded my NVIDIA game ready driver to the latest version (378.49)
4-) Done a Clean Boot. 5-) Updated .NET framework and VC.
6-) Tried opening it in windowed mode with a lower resolution by typing in the Origin command line option: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\DragonAgeInquisition.exe" -w -r:1024x768 (Since I can't launch the game, I can't fiddle around with resolution and windowed mode "normally")
7-) Made sure that the "high powered NVIDIA processor" is selected via the NVIDIA control panel.
😎 Disabled In-Game Origin.
This is my hastebin with system info and so forth: https://hastebin.com/vinoboseqa.tex
It's not AVG, I have Avast.
Please help. I'm at my wits end. I had a similar "fail to launch" issue, years ago with ME:3 on an older machine (Which I never could solve). I don't understand why I keep getting this problem with Origin. ; (
Post on Avast forum saying there are issues with latest update and games with anti-cheat monitor....so it may be related to your Avast antivirus.
Have you tried disabling or at least putting in an exception to DA:I to your Avast AV?
- Anonymous9 years ago
Ohh! I didn't know Avast had this issue...
Alas. Even after completely disabling Avast, I have the same problem.
Momentary black window that goes back to the desktop the moment it tries to go fullscreen. - Anonymous9 years ago
Before blaming Avast, I would look at your dedicated video card, its settings in the Geforce Control Panel, and the driver. Most of the mobile "Optimus" graphics devices have numerous faults, with the most common one being a laziness about getting to work when required to do so. The drivers have been pretty bad from nVIDIA in recent months, with regard to all games running the Frostbite game engine.

I'm a bit stumped on what else I can do to get it running when it comes to the graphics card. Using GeForce Experience I got the latest game ready driver, and using the NVIDIA Control Panel, things should be running with the NVIDIA GPU.
Booted up Skyrim and it's running fine, the NVIDIA GPU Activity states that Skyrim is running in the NVIDIA GPU.
I tried this today, it didn't work for me, but it might for others:
Dragon Age Inquisition failing to launch, Intel Graphics Control Panel fix.

The black window situation (before it tries to fullscreen) that I experience looks just like the one in that vid. ☹️
EDIT:
Tried disabling Secure Boot on Windows 10 as some recomended. No dice, but here's a link in case it helps anyone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWGlJVV3djw
EVEN MORE EDIT:
I opened up the NVIDIA GPU Activity, while I tried opening Dragon Age Inquisition. DragonAgeInquisition.exe was listed very briefly before, as usual, it closed. Also messed around with the Registry files like some suggested. No dice as well. May also be worth checking your power management profiles and make sure everything there is set for highest performance. I have seen someone have an issue with their laptop not wanting to use the better card due to trying to save power.
Can't remember from your earlier posts here, but have you tried deleting your profile files in DAI, and letting them get remade to see if somehow a setting got messed up?? Had that happen to a few people too.
- Anonymous9 years ago
Alrighty. Looked into Power Options. In Advanced settings, I went to PCI Express and in Link State Power Management I selected OFF in both On battery and plugged in. Set Power Options to High Performance.
No change. : (
And I'd kill to be able to dabble with the Profile files....But DA:I only generates them one you successfully start the game. My black screen situation doesn't count as "starting up", so I don't have the Save folder at all. I'm linking into this thread because I'm having the exact same issue. Game tries to start and then just shuts. Have tried what was suggested so far and still no luck. This has been happening ever since Origin updated.
2 things...
Make sure both DAI and the Origin Client have the Run as Administrator selected.( you can also play around with compatibility trying Win7 or 8 as long as you switch both)
If that doesn't work, I am seeing a problem with a .dll file in your DiaX file....
aswhooka.dll
you may try deleting Origin and reinstalling it, and deleting part of DAI and letting Origin repair the install, and see if it makes any difference.
- Anonymous9 years ago
I looked into aswhooka.dll and it seems to be related with Avast... Don't really now if it's affecting anything, or how to deal with it if it is.
Deleted my origin cache and some files in DA:I in the Origin Games box and hit repair. Nothing new.
This is becoming pretty heartbreaking. ☹️
EDIT:
Don't know if it helps, but. I opened task manager while I try to start Dragon Age:Inquisition. It appears very briefly on the list before closing. It almost feels like something is shutting it down. - Anonymous9 years ago
GUYS I FIXED IT! After all that jazz... It was Origin.
I had done a clean install of Origin, and only had DA:I installed. It would black screen and wouldn't open. Nothing seemed to help.
So I wonder, "Will another game work on Origin?". I find Sim City 2000. Easy, quick install. I open it and make it to the title screen. It works. I close it.
I then try to open up DA: I. It works.
I guess Origin needed to open up another game before it would open DA:I? I don't know what mechanisms are behind t but it worked. I bet this is the same thing that happened with my ME:3 all those years ago. Hopefully this will help some people. - Straatford879 years ago

It appears that from some reason Simcity 2000 allowed the proper permissions for Origin on your system. I am not sure why, but I am glad to hear that it fixed your problem!
I will take that information into account for any similar future issues players might have. Thanks again for taking the time to post your findings.
- Anonymous9 years ago
I had the same problem and creating an exception in AVG worked. But now, after playing for 60 hours, I can't get further than connecting to servers and hitting continue. The screen goes black with the 'dragon eye' in the corner, then the music stops and that's it...
Help please!
Might try deleting ProfileOptions and ProfileOptions_options files in your DAI saves folder.
These are the customization of the game options such as video, audio, key bindings and game plays stuff you can choose. Deleting them will reset things back to factory default which may fix your issue IF the settings have gotten corrupted or set to something that doesn't work on your system.
Default location is (Main installed drive...Usually C🙂:\Users\(whatever your user name is)\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save
Having the same issue here as well, AVG exceptions helped one night. Come back the next and the same issue re-appeared. Deleting the profile files in the save folder had no effect either. All it does it come to a black window as it is about to launch then crashes.

@Leon_Carbine0 Hey, perhaps the AVG exceptions were somehow wiped. If you try temporarily disabling it that should help to determine if AVG is still a factor, or if the issue lies elsewhere.
Cheers. - Anonymous9 years ago
@Leon_Carbine0 Hi, turns out that for me it was a corrupted save file in the end. Issue resolved by loading the previous game save and continuing from that.
So I put avg into passive mode, restarted the computer and that seemed to work. I then reactivated avg and restarted and it was still working (even opening and closing the game a few times). Come back the next day and the same issue has re-appeared.
