Re: Bug report (PC): crash in rift battle in Hinterlands northwest

I was able to complete that battle after completing some northwestern quests and returning from the northwest to fight the battle. So I continued playing and have not encountered any bugs until today. I have nearly cleared the hinterlands region (except for Redwall) and then experienced the same crash in another rift. This is one of the two southwestern rifts in some forest region (sorry I don't remember the name), the western-most of the pair, deep in a cave just west of the large bear area where you can get great bear claws. This battle, just like the other one, also features despair demons who appear to have a nasty long-range attack. I don't know what the attack is, but it comes with a sound effect that I hear just after my screen goes dark. It's the last sound I hear from the game.

From where I sit, there appears to be a graphic effect tied to a despair demon attack which kills my video and crashes the game.

Interestingly, I have found that the system is not TOTALLY locked, but the video is. I can hit ctrl-alt-del twice (with a short pause in between) and I can tell that the system is rebooting. However, the video does not turn on again until I do a cold boot from a complete power off. I presume the system is booting because I see sudden hard drive activity, then my keyboard numlock indicator goes off, comes back on, then extended hard drive activity.

EA_David: I will send my savegame for this second battle as soon as I finish with this post. I will then see if the problem repeats, and then try dialing back my settings. I am playing on Ultra right now, with all the bells and whistles turned on, so there's plenty of room to retreat.

If your system is really and truly rebooting but the video doesn't come back up, and will only come back if you power the card down, then I would say you have a hardware issue and something about the attack triggers it.  If it was simply a software crash, and your op system reboots it should bring all other hardware back online.  But to have to power off to get a reset....may just be weird juju, but sounds like a hardware failure of some sort...

That's a good point. However, my story about the reboot is mostly guesswork - without video, I have to rely on other cues. I'm a new Windows 8 user, so I'm not familiar with all its quirks. I have also been through these fights and crashed in a way that no amount of ctrl-alt-dels would fix, so I had to hold down the power button to force a stop.

Doing rigorous testing on this makes me nervous. I don't like forcing any OS to do such a harsh shutdown, especially repeatedly.

I'm about to dive back in, this time with minimal graphics enabled, and see what happens.

I was able to repeat the crash with my usual graphics settings, so I changed the graphics to "Medium" and tried again. This time, I was able to complete the battle without trouble. I have no idea, of course, if that was just luck - Did I run the battle in such a way that the game-crashing graphic never executed? Hard for me to say.

My graphics setup looks like this (from the NVidia control panel):

Thanks, I got your save and unfortunately wasn't able to replicate the issue. I don't have a 970 to test but I did on a 770 and a 560ti. It might be worth removing and reinstalling a fresh set of graphics drivers. Perhaps there's some corruption of a driver file and a clean slate will help.
