I think the explanation was that they want the player to feel like having a mage in the party wasn't mandatory, but then they put the "energize" mechanic in the game so you still need mages to access certain areas.

    @Fred_vdp I don't know what they wanted to do exactly but I do know that to have at least one healing mage would have been awesome when fighting dragons for example (honestly, it is kind of stupid to go and fight high dragons without a healer in your party especially when they did such a good job in the previous games at showing how deadly an opponent they were). That being said plenty of players have been able to fight the different bosses in all games without having a healer in their party I am sure. All in all I'd say mages in your party at all time were less of a necessity in the previous games than in Inquisition where you need to have a rogue, a mage and a warrior at all time to be sure to access everywhere in the game...
