Re: Dragon Age Inquisition crashes on startup

Some users of Avast have been reporting a need to add exceptions into that Anti-virus program now.

    You are very welcome!  Enjoy your game!

  • Yep spot on. Yep manually adding DA:I as an exclusion from Avast did the trick, thanks for this. It only happened after the most recent Avast antivirus update about 1-2 days ago.

    I tried your suggestion since I'm having a similar issue, but it didn't work. I have tried turning off my shields and even that didn't work. Is there any other suggestions you could think of?

    Thank you.

  • Uninstall the PoS a/v you're using and get one that doesn't cause this sort of problem.

    @bittersweet806

    If you have put in exceptions for either Avast or AVG, have tried disabling it, and if you have tried a clean boot of your machine and it still doesn't work, then we need more info on what is going on.

    Post a DxDiag file here per the sticky at the top of this forum on how to post.  Post exactly what it is doing, anything you have done, and anything else you think might be relevant.  Without more info though, we can only guess.  But as I have stated before....99% of the time if the game starts for a second, goes blackscreen then closes, it is Anti-virus issues, and you simply haven't set things correctly to ignore Origin, DAI, and DAI saves folder....

    A thousand thanks for a more up to date answer. Google searches kept leading me into the blind alley of "update your drivers". Could any mods bump this up somewhere as a possible solution?

    I have gotten a brand new desktop and since I play DAI daily,and am not a fan of CTD,I'm wondering if you would know of any a/v that won't cause DAI to CTD,like Avast and AVG. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

    I think Windows Defender and MalwareBytes cause no issues. I still use Avast, but with exceptions for the Origin and Dragon Age folders.

    @txchimama BitDefender also has no issues in my experience. I use the free version, far less annoying than my previous AV (paid version of AVG, felt more like adware with all the 'buy things!' nagging).

    @fr3shmcmuffin23

    How do you do what??

    Please remember we can't read your mind, or know exactly who you are talking too, or about unless you tell us......so please be specific.

    If you are asking how to create exceptions, then I would google a video about it, or visit the website help section of your Anti-virus program for specific instructions.

    Also of note, most AV have two lists, one for scanning and one global.

    Scanning only stops the AV from scanning the files when you do a computer virus scan.

    Global one stops it from interfering with any action the program takes, which is the one you want to set for DAI, DAI Saves, and Origin.

    First thing you should try is deleting the Patch_ModManagerMerge folder located at:

    Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\Update\Patch_ModManagerMerge

    In my case that folder somehow got corrupted and caused the game to crash. When I deleted the entire folder and ran DAI Mod Manager again it fixed the game crash issue.

    Yes, this is it! Had to add the game's .exe manually from Steam's folder!

    Thank you!

    I'm closing this thread to stop it from being necroed.

    If you have any issues with Dragon Age: Inquisition, please make a new topic about your problems and what kind of steps you have tried to solve them.
