This happened to me even when the game is already activated. I bought the game when it released and I've been playing it for hundreds of hours but all the sudden I cannot because Origin tells me that this version of the game is not and cannot be activated.
Yet a sad example where paying customers are the ones being punished by DRM **bleep**. People who don't have this issue are those who pirated the game.
I will not support this sick and twisted practice anymore – enough is enough. Only games I buy are those without DRM from now on.
