Rift in the Outskirts Neither Open nor Closed

I've closed one of the two rifts in the outskirts but I'm having trouble with the second.  It's outside the Crossroads by the ruined fortified wall.  I approach and I can see the rift (also appears on my quest map) but it doesn't spawn any demons for me to kill and I can't interact with it.

Unpassable glitch or is there something I can do to it?

  • Which map??  Hinterlands??  Anyway, sounds like a bug/broken rift.  Good news is you don't HAVE to close rifts to advance the main quest most times, very few exceptions. Option is to reload a previous save, and try a repair game, or ignore and move on and hope none of the others are effected.

I also had this problem. For me, the issue was resolved by approaching the rift from a different direction. If you approach from the tower side (crossing the wall) the rift waves will not trigger. You have to leave the area and approach from the other direction (near Witchwood). You have to be far enough away that the rift "combat" mode stops and you put away your weapons. Then approaching from the Witchwood side should trigger the waves. At least, if you have the same issue I was having.

Go up the trail with steps on the other side of the walls and, approach form on top of that tower structure - should pop the rift just fine. Pain for Melee classes that have to run back down to it but, perfect for ranged.
