Stuck in Cousland Castle in Dragon Age: Origins

So, I go through all the intial things for the noble human start, and I initiate the attack by Howe. I kill the ones that try to get into my room, kill the ones attempting to get into my mother's room, and I loot all that I can. I initiate seeing my brother's family, then I move onto the other room where I fight a knight. I looked it up a bit, and apparently there are suppose to be four Howe men in this room, but there is only one knight for me. Anyways, I kill him, loot him and enter the opened room and loot everything in there. Then I try to go into the guest room, but it says I need a key, and it says the same thing for the exit door. I have looped around as many times as I can to find a key or something, I have created four games with and without my mods, and I can't seem to get out of this silly series of rooms. I don't know what to do or look for. I played through the first few times on the PS3 version without any issues and decided to buy the pc version from steam. I have the ultimate edition. I never had a problem until now. Admitedly I modded my game because I have played through already, so I didn't play the game before I put mods onto it. I installed/downloaded it, modded it, played it, and I can't proceed past this point. Is it a bug? Am I missing something? What is going on?
