I am agreeing with everything said in this thread so far. I was so sad playing this game, which should have been a wonderful, long awaited return to the world of Dragon Age, my absolute favorite among all gaming universes. Instead it turned out to be the biggest dissapointment I can remember and towards the end of what was my first (and likely my only) playthrough , I literally longed for the game to be over. If the companions and their interaction had been made just decent, it would have made a huge difference.
Now my only hope is that modders will get to work and make the game at least somewhat playable. I have lost hope in Bioware or whats left of it, fixing this sad excuse for a Dragon Age game with patches and dlc's. Larian Studio did it with BG3, but they have shown a different kind of relationship with their players all along and to me Bioware/EA haven't shown the slightest interest in listening to their fanbase. But who knows, maybe a xmas miracle (or ten) still can happen?
BG3 also had a really good starting product. It was in early access for what seemed like forever, but they used that to refine and polish the game so when it released, it swept the awards. It really was that good. They could afford to take a small core team to work on additional content with how much money they made - over six times their original budget.
Contrast that with Veilguard - they released some trailers and players were literally telling them the combat looked awful and not like Dragon Age and why are there only two companions you can't even control and it was not what they wanted or expected, and Bioware's response was "Our players found this more engaging" - they just didn't listen. No early access, no working with the people who were going to buy the product, just developing in a vacuum and subsequent failure.
No, I liken what happened here more to what happened with Final Fantasy XIV 1.0.
They COULD pull a Square Enix and put a new producer in charge, add the equivalent of a Calamity event, and re-release in 1-2 years with fixes of the core systems and writing... but that would really be dreaming. That would require the developers to believe in their product and be willing to tell some team members "No, that's NOT a good idea, we're not adding that." Things I don't know if they are capable of doing.
I'm really beyond disappointed in the whole thing.
