Momentum and mana generation is too slow

Am I doing something wrong here.

My first playthrough was on Storyteller so really didn't notice anything. Now I am on my second play through, and understanding combat a bit better, I have it set on Adventure level. I have created both a Mage and a rogue. The Mage has enough mana for 2 or 3 staff shots or one spell per combat, never generates more than that. the Rogue almost never has momentum. I understand getting hit reduces momentum, but should it take ALL of it? On the rear occasion I build enough to get an ability off, a single hit will take it to 0 and I have to start all over, which takes forever. On average the Rogue gets to use an ability once every 4 combats. The Mage is a little better and gets a spell off maybe every 2 combats.

I don't get what good are the spells and abilities if you never get to use them. Normal battles aren't too bad, but no momentum/mana makes boss fights near impossible. Especially since the boss will target me and me only. I end up running it in circles until my companions do enough combos to take it down. What fun!

I've looked in the combat settings and didn't see anything that will build momentum/mana faster. and I try to select every skill that increase generation, but nothing seems to work. Generation is just as slow at level 20 as it was at level 1.

  • Think I figured out my Rogue. Went through all my skills and found HUNTERS FOCUS eats momentum, and I didn't realize it.  I was using it often and eating up what little momentum I had. So I stopped using it for awhile let my momentum bar build up full and now it's a lot more manageable. At least now I know why I couldn't keep any momentum. <Face Palm>

  • There's an ability for mages to manually charge mana. It's pretty fast and very useful. I think it's somewhere in the top left of the skill web. You can also later expand maximum mana with equipment, so you have a bigger pool to draw from.

    Edit: Added a screenshot.

It's this one. "Channeled Thoughts", right before heading into the Death Caller specialization.

As for the rogue, I personally didn't have much of an issue building up momentum. I just got a few hits in, dodged a lot, and if someone was at a distance I kept my momentum going by firing some quick shots.

  • At level 20 you already have access to a few skills which replenish mana faster and a few items which gives +50 mana (a skill too). Aside that, there is are skills to reduce the mana cost for ranged attack (staff), recover mana on critical hit (abilities), replenish mana on take-down.

    Fred_vdpmention about this skill:

You can get it investing 13 points from the beginning (via Meteor Ability). At level 20 you should be able to use about 200 mana or 250 if you insist but increasing mana should not be the main focus. Increasing damage/mana is another thing - like adding 50 more mana to increase ability damage, sacrifice HP to increase ability damage. It's easy to manage the mana and as it is I can say it's balanced enough..

    Here's few more hints:

JassperK So, there are about 3-5 things I noticed that Fred_vdp called out as well that I had to look up when I first started playing. I was swapping gear and trying different things but wasn't getting what I wanted.

    1. Focus on Mana Regeneration Passives
      • Check your talent tree for passives or abilities that increase "mana per second" or "mana on hit" effects. Often, passives aren't immediately obvious but can be found in the support or defensive trees.
      • Look for talents that increase your "restorative magic" effects, as these sometimes grant mana regen bonuses when using defensive or buff abilities.
    2. Use Basic Attacks Between Spells
      • Your staff shots may be slow, but they should not consume mana. If they do, you might be using a special stance or enchantment. If so, switch it off during regular fights to conserve mana for spells.
      • Alternate between basic staff attacks and spells. Staff hits sometimes trigger "on-hit" mana effects, especially with the right abilities unlocked.
    3. Check the Gear you wear and have in your pack
      • Some gear items have passive effects like “+X mana regen per second” or “mana regen when health is below 50%”.
      • Prioritize gear with mana efficiency reduction (abilities cost less mana) or mana regen boost. The boosts are my favorite
    4. Spell Timing and Resource Management
      • If you’re running out of mana after one spell, you’re likely over-relying on high-cost spells. Use cheaper, utility-focused spells (like slows or minor elemental effects) and conserve mana for bigger moments.
      • Look for "mana return on kill" or "mana on combo" passive bonuses. These passives reward you for chaining together combos with allies.
    5. Combat Strategies
      • Instead of focusing on burst-damage spells, lean into crowd-control or debuff-based spells, which often have lower costs.
      • Consider using AoE spells like Fireball or Ice to impact multiple enemies at once. This allows you to rely on your companions to clean up enemies, rather than doing all the heavy lifting yourself. So I wrote out a book for myself for my next playthrough, but after researching, here is what it came down to for myself, at least.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, I'll go back and restructure my mage and see if that helps. All the tips for the mage make since. But the rogue has me stumped. My first play though was a rogue as well and this wasn't an issue on the easier game plays. (It wasn't storyteller, it was the second one, can't remember the name) But for some reason on The 3rd difficulty level this rogue just can not build any momentum. Even arrow hits move the bar very little. I'll have to compare the skills between the 2 and see what's different.

On the rogue, I did at first, but with the mage, I can see it. I started a mage the other day for another round, and it's just really slow for some reason to me. I had to do some searching to get the answers I was looking for just on momentum. That is why I would love more guides on here. Show others how to set up some good builds!

JassperK There you go! it's all about testing out builds, gear etc. I was having an issue with arrows not regenerating but then saw my armor was causing it and it took me hours to even realize it. Now I have it set to where they build up much faster. I started with a rogue and almost done, so now I get to move on to a Mage and maybe some more lords of fortune action.
