Okay I have tested a save before I recruited Emmrich, went through all the steps and before I did anything, got the Restless Spirits quest from Emmrich which opens the door and gives you Pinnacle of Its Kind. I killed all three demons and the door is open.
I am thinking it closes if you do Heart of Corruption quest before Pinnacle of Its Kind as it gives you a "circle", similar to the one you get from Pinnacle quest, which I will be testing now. Will update/edit the post when I do.
Update: I have tested finishing Heart of Corruption and picking up the circle, and the door is still open for Pinnacle of Its Kind. I have no idea what triggers the door being closed.
