So I tried with multiple games (BF4, BF2042, SW: Jedi Survivor, They are Billions).
The solution I mentioned that wasn't working was creating a shortcut directly from the game .exe file (and even trying to launch the .exe didn't work).
Yes, launching games directly from within the EA App worked.
I managed to fix it by uninstalling EA using Revo Uninstaller which helped remove SOME of the registry entries, but I noticed some irregularities (listings of the old Origin launcher etc), so I used RegScanner to scan for any entries containing old links (Origin etc) and either delete them or manually amend them. It was almost as if some games had entries that pointed to needing origin, which then pointed to EA App rather than being properly updated when the app was updated.
Then Installed EA App again and now it seems to be working. Creating shortcuts or launching the exe works.
Very painful process, and I wont detail exactly what I did in case someone tries and really breaks it.
Ultimately, it looks like through the myriad of updates to Origin and the EA App, there have been broken registry entries and incomplete update processes.
And this doesn't address the whole problem of not being able to do it from within the app...
There should indeed be a function within the app, hopefully it will be added in the future.
