Guys, I think that I have found the solution (sorry for my bad english ....)

The problem seems to link with the account.

When the loggin screen appears, you have to log with your "account name" and not your email.

You can choose it by click on the blue link on the bottom of the loggin screen.

I've got a suspicion that it could have something to do with using an account you had EA Play for Steam on as that caused issues with me when trying to download DLC for Battlefield 4 on Origin. Does anyone that has this issue owned EA play for Steam before?

Interestingly enough, today I open up EA Desktop, and it opens and its working like it should.  No idea what changed to fix it.

I can tell you that it is not, in fact, fixed in the US. I found this thread just now after encountering this same problem and I live in Texas. 

I had the same issues described here after trying to check if EA Play works with my Xbox Game Pass (i.e. EA Desktop would not launch properly even though the process started). In my case, I noticed that my Xbox PC app was also not behaving properly - every page would lead me to "Looks like you're stranded..." error. What is more, no news about EA Play integration appeared there, which I thought was weird (as if it was not updated properly). Interestingly, it fixed the Xbox app and updated it with EA Play integration games (e.g. I could now search for FIFA from Xbox app). I clicked install on one of them (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to be exact), and it asked me to link the Xbox account with EA Play one. After doing this, EA Desktop App launched normally and started downloading the game.

So not sure if this is the case for everyone, but I thought I'd share 🙂 

TLDR version with all steps:

To fix Xbox app I've done the following (original thread here):

1. On Windows, go to settings > apps and features.
2. On the list of apps, go to Xbox. Click advanced options.
3. Click Reset. (I did not test Repair but it might work as well)
   

Then:

1. Start the Xbox app
2. Check that EA Play games are now on the main page.
3. Install any of them.
4. Fill out pop-up asking to link EA Play and Xbox accounts.
5. EA Desktop opens up as it should and installs the game. Now I can start/stop EA Desktop reliably and it no longer disappears.

@snollyghoster01 Holy crap! Thank you! I didn't actually even need to do any of the updating/repair things, just tried to install FIFA 20 from the Xbox App and everything worked normally. Crazy! 

*Edit* Annnd it immediately crashed and stopped installing. I spoke too soon. Well, minor progress at least. 

Resetting xbox app worked for me too! app works now 🙂
