Re: Unable to change game installation directory from EA desktop app

I have been dealing with this problem for over a year. I am appalled it has not bee fixed yet, especially with this many people having the issue. My C:\ drive will not even fit a game

(got to love window updates), so I can't even download a game due to not being able to switch to the D:\.

    Hey everyone,

If you're still running into this, then please provide me with an Error Report ID.

    1. Open the EA app
    2. Click on the 3 horizontal lines in the top right
    3. Go to Help > Error Reporter
    4. Fill in the details
    5. Click on Submit Report
    6. Share the Report ID in this thread

    Steps:

    1. Click download button on mass effect.

    2. Choose a non-C:\ drive download location.

    3. Game installs to C:\ drive.

    4. End.

  • I'm trying to install Mass Effect Legendary edition via Gamepass. It made me install this pointless EA desktop app.

When I enter the EA app it tells me that Mass effect can't be installed on my C drive as there's not enough space - True! because my C drive is an SSD with my OS on only. The drive literally is not big enough for the game.

So I point the game to to my H drive, where I install all of my games. fantastic the app says I've got space. Good because I do!
    I click next.
I get a warning, low disk space. The game is installing where? to my C drive.... Great.
So I cancel the download, I clear the EA desktop app cache, I try uninstalling the app and reinstalling it. I try uninstalling and reinstalling on the H drive. Each time I change the download folder in the app settings to H and then click to download the game and change the install path to the H drive and each time without fail your poorly engineerd worthless bloatware moronically tries to install the game on C - a drive that wouldn't have enough space for it even if it was empty!!!

So you tell me, why can your useless engineers not achieve a basic function in your obnoxious roadblock of an app? If I failed this badly at my job I wouldn't have one. Could you guys please, for the love of god, pull someone competent off the inevitable NFT project and fix your app, in the meantime could you please offer some kind of workaround so I can perhaps play the game I've paid for?

  • Ok I seem to have fixed it myself, If your issue is the same as mine and not like the past issues where the change folder option was blank.

    This is what I did

    1. Uninstalled EA desktop app
    2. Downloaded the installer manually (previous attempts I'd initiated the installer from Gamepass directly, don't do this)
    3. Install the app to the destination drive that you want your games to install to (in my case "H:\EA Desktop")

    4. Make sure that's where the app actually installed (as on a previous attempt it didn't and went to C again)
    5. Launch the app and before doing anything else goto settings (three bars top left) downloads and change the download folder to where you want it to be (I don't know if it makes a difference or not but I created the folder I wanted to use first) In my case I used "H:\EAgames"
    6. now, Exit the App and launch it again. check in settings that it's retained the new folder path
    7. Goto your game and select to download, change the game install path to the folder you created previously

Finally. turn three times on the spot cast some salt over your shoulder, invoke the sacred words to call forth you spirit animal, douse yourself in eggwash and stuff a sock full of conkers.

The last part there is not necessary but hopefully highlights how stupid it is that we have to jump through all these hoops just to install a damned game. Sort it out EA.

  • @djdeviate Finally ! Thanks a lot, I can now play Mass Effect.

Such a shame for EA that every answer here comes from users even after some months.

so, this is what I did to get a game to dl/install to the destination i chose.

-on the directory you want to download the game on, make a folder (ex: D:\Apex)

    -uninstall EA desktop

    -reboot

    -reinstall EA desktop(default settings/location)

    -log on

-click the 3 lines on upper left of app

-go to help > app recovery, then hit the clear cache button. should restart by itself

    -exit app after it restarts

-right click EA desktop and run as administrator

-pick the game you want to dl

-pick your destination (mine was D:\Apex)

    -boom

maybe it woudlve worked if you skipped the first step, but right now it's downloading on there and I'm glad with that.

No matter what I change every game I install from EA Desktop Beta (as I'm launching that from Xbox Game Pass) FORCES the install to the C: drive.

I've set the default in settings to G:\EAPlay and when I start the install it shows the correct path - G:\EAPlay\(GAMENAME) yet as soon as it starts downloading it writes files into C:\Program Files\EA Games - nothing I do will change this and as I run a small partition for my OS I now can't install anything via Play.

I've tried everything I've found in this thread yet it always goes to C: instead of what is shown in the UI.

    Thoughts??

@SergioShen6: Facing the same issues here. Always installs in C: instead of what is in the UI or which path I selected before downloading

Sergio, take a look at the #4 comment; ended up working for me.

Its annoying, but when you're about to install the game, click the link to change the install location, and then manually type G:\EAPlay. For whatever reason, the install only works properly for a top level directory. I ended up creating a new folder for mine (D:\MassEffect)

It turns out you can use this trick for higher folder level, you just need to repeat the operation by just typing the folder name of the second level (without typing the fist level !).

    Hope this help !

    Cheers

  • @djdeviate its January 23rd in 2023 now, and I came here cause I did it exactly how you discribed it here... But unfortunately it installed on C: anyways, even if I was putting the installer in an extra folder on my 2 TB M.2 where I have all launchers, games and mods installed.

Seems like EA doesnt want that we can play their games how we want. Well... less money for them. Eggs Dee
  • Do you remember from where you downloads the EA app? I was trying to do this and ensuring the app is installed on the drive that I want, but for some reason before installation a new message appears where it talks about granting permission - if I expand I see that the EA app location for installation is Drive C again, even though I just put Drive D .... it's so annoying I really don't know how to work around it
