LizzielilyyFirst, I want to say that I can understand your thought process, which probably stems from the fact that you share the same frustration as most people here.
I know that on WordPress you can have users/subscribers at several different levels, so that in addition to writing comments, users can create independent posts. Subscribers with the right to comment only require you as Admin, to approve their comment once.
If users are to be able to create posts themselves, they require a membership. I opted out of it on my page because I initially felt I was being spammed with strange email addresses I wasn't comfortable with. Furthermore, it does not require membership to write comments.
I think you can find plugins that can increase the security of your blog. There are a lot of good YouTube tutorials that can answer almost all questions about WordPress.
A better option is probably to avoid mixing it into your private blog.
I am a moderator on a Danish forum. It is created on forumotion.com. It is, like WordPress.com, free to use. The layout is quite similar to what we know from the old Forum.
Would I be interested in participating in another external Forum?
I have the same concerns as when I mentioned discord. It is difficult to attract new participants. It must have a very clear profile and it probably requires a fair amount of support from several users. There are probably others who have an opinion on this.
Thank you for your thoughts and wisdom!! I’m a much bigger fan of discord and would prefer to go this way. I think there are very easy ways to promote the community if it was something that existed, a new forum would be a whole other beast I’d definitely not have any experience in!! I’m leaning away from adding forums to my own site for reasons like you’ve mentioned. I know it’s early days and these forums could soon be remedied but I’m kind of sick of giving EA my time and energy when they are just so bad at making anything worthwhile any more 🙈 that’s as ranty as I’ll make this but I’m sick of wishing they’d do the bare minimum and being tripped up when they don’t.
