Proposal for a next-generation AI system for EA Sports FC Career Mode

Main idea

My suggestion is that EA Sports FC should develop a completely new artificial intelligence system exclusively for Career Mode, without affecting Ultimate Team, Online Seasons, Clubs, or any other competitive online mode.

The goal is not simply to make the CPU more difficult. The goal is to make it more intelligent, more realistic, and more dynamic, creating a football experience that feels much closer to real football.

Why Career Mode should have a separate AI system

Online gameplay requires balance, consistency, and responsiveness for competitive matches. Career Mode has completely different priorities.

Because Career Mode runs locally, EA could implement a much more advanced AI system without worrying about online balance or latency.

This would allow Career Mode to become the most immersive and realistic mode in the game.

Team intelligence instead of individual intelligence

Currently, players often behave as isolated units. My idea is that each team should have a collective intelligence system that coordinates all 11 players together.

Instead of each player making disconnected decisions, the entire team would follow a shared tactical plan.

For example:

  • center-backs would automatically provide defensive cover;
  • fullbacks would attack only when protected;
  • midfielders would occupy spaces and passing lanes intelligently;
  • attackers would make coordinated runs;
  • the team would press and defend as a unified unit.

This would eliminate many unrealistic situations where teammates stop moving, leave huge defensive gaps, or fail to attack open space.

Two AI systems controlling the match

Every match would have two tactical AI systems.

Team A AI

  • controls positioning;
  • organizes pressing;
  • manages defensive structure;
  • coordinates attacking patterns;
  • reacts to the opponent.

Team B AI

  • does exactly the same independently.

Matches would become tactical battles between two organized teams instead of a player competing against scripted behavior.

Tactical intelligence by difficulty level

Difficulty should not primarily be based on artificial attribute boosts.

Instead, it should be based on the quality of the AI’s decision-making.

Amateur

  • poor positioning;
  • slow reactions;
  • limited tactical organization.

Semi-Pro

  • basic defensive structure;
  • simple movement patterns.

Professional

  • good spacing;
  • organized pressing;
  • effective transitions.

World Class

  • coordinated attacking movements;
  • intelligent defensive cover;
  • tactical adjustments during the match.

Legendary

  • analyzes the player’s attacking patterns;
  • changes formations when necessary;
  • marks dangerous players;
  • adjusts pressing intensity.

Ultimate

  • learns from previous matches;
  • prepares specific tactical plans;
  • makes intelligent substitutions;
  • changes strategy depending on the score.

The challenge would come from football intelligence, not from unrealistic CPU advantages.

Unique tactical identities for managers

Every manager should feel different.

Guardiola-style teams

  • possession football;
  • positional play;
  • high pressing;
  • short passing build-up.

Simeone-style teams

  • compact defending;
  • aggressive marking;
  • counter-attacking football.

Klopp-style teams

  • intense pressing;
  • fast transitions;
  • vertical attacking play.

Smaller clubs

  • deep defensive blocks;
  • disciplined organization;
  • direct football;
  • strong focus on set pieces.

Playing against Manchester City should feel completely different from playing against a smaller defensive team.

AI adaptation during the match

The AI should observe the player’s behavior.

For example:

  • if the player attacks mainly through the left side, the AI strengthens that side;
  • if crosses are constantly used, defenders position deeper;
  • if through balls are repeatedly attempted, the defensive line adjusts;
  • if possession becomes ineffective, the AI changes its pressing intensity.

This would make every match feel different and unpredictable.

Dynamic evolution throughout the career

Managers should evolve over time.

As a career progresses, managers could develop new tactical traits.

Examples:

  • improved youth development;
  • stronger defensive organization;
  • better pressing systems;
  • faster counter-attacks;
  • smarter substitutions.

Clubs would gradually develop different identities depending on the manager in charge.

Real match preparation

Scouting reports should become meaningful.

Before each match, the coaching staff could provide information such as:

  • preferred attacking side;
  • defensive weaknesses;
  • pressing intensity;
  • aerial vulnerability;
  • transition speed.

Tactical preparation would become an important part of Career Mode.

Long-term benefits

This system would:

  • dramatically increase Career Mode immersion;
  • create much greater match variety;
  • reduce repetitive gameplay;
  • make tactical decisions truly meaningful;
  • increase Career Mode longevity;
  • give offline gameplay its own unique identity.

The problem of repetition and the opportunity for the next EA Sports FC

I believe this would be even more important for the next generation of EA Sports FC.

If the next game aims to create a larger, more immersive football world, Career Mode needs to evolve as well.

Right now, the biggest problem is not just the difficulty of the CPU. The biggest problem is repetition.

After a few matches, opponents start behaving similarly, teammates make the same mistakes, and the sense of realism begins to disappear.

With a collective and adaptive AI system, every match could tell a different story.

One team might press aggressively, another might defend deeply, another might dominate possession, and another might focus entirely on counter-attacks.

Managers would make tactical adjustments during matches, respond to the player’s decisions, and create unique challenges every time.

This would make players want to play one more match, one more season, and one more career.

Why this matters to offline players

Personally, I almost never play the online modes in EA Sports FC.

The reason I buy the game is Career Mode.

I enjoy building a squad, developing young players, managing tactics, and creating long-term careers.

The problem is that after a few days, I usually stop playing because the gameplay becomes repetitive.

Matches start feeling too similar, the AI becomes predictable, and the experience loses its excitement.

I believe many Career Mode players feel the same way.

They do not necessarily want an unfairly difficult CPU.

They want a CPU that feels alive, intelligent, and capable of surprising them.

A smarter Career Mode AI would keep players engaged for months instead of days.

Impact on the community and player retention

This would not only improve gameplay.

It would also bring many offline players back to Career Mode.

A more dynamic and intelligent Career Mode would encourage players to start multiple careers, manage different clubs, experiment with different tactical systems, and continue playing for much longer periods.

This would significantly increase player engagement and retention.

Instead of feeling like every season is the same, each career would become a unique football story.

Development strategy

EA would not need to rebuild the entire game immediately.

This AI system could be developed specifically for Career Mode while online gameplay continues using the current competitive structure.

Career Mode could become a testing ground for the next generation of football AI.

In my opinion, this would be one of the biggest innovations in the history of the EA Sports FC franchise.

The goal is not to make the CPU stronger.

The goal is to make football smarter, more dynamic, and less repetitive.
