Forum Discussion
I'm sure that there's a lot more that I'm not considering, as my mind is focused on some less fun things at the moment (hence my tardiness this month), but I hope that this little contribution will still be useful.
- Changing Account Details.
This is a bit of a general one. Often, one of the first things that someone will do when they gain access to an account is to change the contact details to ones they can access, for example, changing the email address on the account. This effectively locks the original owner out and means that the fraudster can run rampant through the account and even access personal and payment data that can be used to access other accounts or make fraudulent purchases. If 2FA is set and the validation method is secure, then it should mean that the account is protected.
- Mobile Phone Theft and Work Apps.
I'm mentioning this one with work more in mind than anything else. A lot of people use their phones for work or have one provided by their employer, and work apps absolutely need 2FA. I use Teams on my phone for work occasionally and can only access it after I use my biometrics through an authenticator app. If I didn't have this set and someone stole my phone, then they could very easily access my chats, the email database for my place of work, confidential information, all of my files in SharePoint, and no doubt more than I've come up with off the top of my head.
- Banking.
Probably quite obvious, but 2FA is incredibly important for banking, as you don't want to make it easy for someone to access your bank account and transfer all of your money somewhere else without any authorisation or checks being required. The other thing to consider here is that, if someone accesses your account and you have no protections in place, then there is the possibility that the bank won't be able to reclaim the funds or refund you.
