A Way Out - Missing DLL: [XINPUT1_3.dll] Error: 0x7E - Windows 11

Hello everyone,

I just bought "A Way Out" via Steam. When I launch the game, I get the following error:

Invalid license. Reason code = Missing DLL: [XINPUT1_3.dll] Error: 0x7E.

I am on a fresh installation of Windows 11, on recent hardware, completely up-to-date via Windows Update. Here is a chronological list of things that I tried, each leading to the exact same error code:

Can you please fix this? It's really frustrating to pay for a game, make sure that your software and hardware are compliant and STILL not be able to play it...

    Hey @SnorkyTheSnork

Thanks for the update, I've changed the post from being solved!

To confirm you still get the error "Missing DLL: [XINPUT1_3.dll] Error: 0x7E"? Could you get a screenshot or video of how it looks when you try to launch A Way Out?

If so, can you try Installing (or repairing if prompted) the VC++ and DirectX files?

    Thanks!

    Hey @SnorkyTheSnork

To confirm you've tried the following already?

If so, would it be possible to get a DxDiag file?

    Thanks!

  • Hello @EA_Illium

Thank you for taking the time to look into my problem. Sorry for the delay in response, it was a busy two weeks.

    • Default your PC to the dedicated Graphics card: DONE, didn't fix the problem
    • Close other running applications on your device: DONE, didn't fix the problem.
    • Try running the client and game as an admin: DONE, didn't fix the problem.
    • Check for other applications that may be limiting EA App or Game performance: DONE, didn't fix the problem.
    • Run the System File Checker tool, then Check for Windows and GPU updates: DONE, didn't fix the problem.
    • Repair or Install the VC++ files for your game (Guide here): DONE, didn't fix the problem.
    • Restart your device in Clean Boot mode first then try again: DONE, didn't fix the problem.

Just so you know, I completely reinstalled my computer for this, so it's literally nothing more than a clean Windows 11, completely up-to-date via Windows Update and the Microsoft Store, with Intel and AMD drivers installed, Steam and nothing more.

I also tried with AtlasOS, which is a de-cluttered Windows version, without all the bloatware it usually comes with. It didn't help either.

Now, I'm back on a clean installation of Windows 11, with the following DxDiag output attached. (removed it, since it wasn't relevant)

  • Also @EA_Illium could you please not mark this thread as "Solved" ? My problem is not solved at all, it just took me a lot of time to try the 7 different things you said.

  • Hi @EA_Illium

Just to keep you in the loop. I actually found the answer myself.

For whatever reason, the version of Windows I had was precisely Windows 11 Pro N instead of Windows 11 Pro. Now, I didn't know much about this edition, but it seems to make a big difference. Windows N stands for "Windows Not with Media Player". It was initially released to fight Microsoft's monopoly on media players.

The presence of Windows Media Player is supposed to be the only difference, but my theory is that default Windows editions also ship with proprietary codecs or other things that don't come in N editions. And that DirectX needs theses codecs to run properly.

TL;DR: If you're facing the same issue as me, check if your version of Windows is "Windows [...] N". If that is the case, I don't know any way other than reinstalling your OS with a non-N Windows edition. It's what worked for me. Good luck.
