- Clear the EA app cache: https://help.ea.com/en/help/faq/clear-cache-to-fix-problems-with-your-games/
- In the EA app, click on the game and then Manage, Repair
- Download and install all available Windows Updates
- Run System File Checker to help ensure the integrity of your Windows System files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
- Perform a clean boot before starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 or http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-clean-boot-your-pc/
Platform is Steam. Try here.

WU, SFC and clean boot are all valid strategies though.
Thanks for the quick replies!
Windows Updates are all current.
Validated files for F1 23 in Steam successfully.
Ran SFC and it did find errors and repaired them. Ran SFC until it stated it no longer found any errors.
Performed a full clean boot and then launched the game and tested. Unfortunately the issue occurred right away.
Next steps?
Appreciate the help.

Next would seem unrelated to your actual issue, but let's fix them anyway.
WER has a giUpdater.exe crash and your Thrustmaster wheel does not have properties listed on the FFB driver. (Odd that other modes work?)
https://support.thrustmaster.com/en/product/tspcracer-en/ (TS-PC Racer in advanced mode, latest firmware v13, latest driver 2023_TTRS_4, advise on rim used please)
Please read the release notes

Update ROCCAT software (recent) as another WER event

Choose a default sound source in Windows. Hopefully this coincides with what you use in-game.

Okay, checked Thrustmaster wheel (Model T248) and the drivers were up to date but firmware was not. That is now running firmware 2.0.
Default sound is set to my external audio interface correctly.
I did update the Roccat Swarm software a few days ago but I checked for anything new: It is still up-to-date.
Tested the game and instead of getting the track/qualifying splash screen then the black screen with just loading in the top left, it went from the splash screen to just a blank black screen and crashed immediately.
Since the issue happens in both my team and driver career and only when you progress from practice to qualifying, I decided to try an solo event in F1 world where there is qualifying. Here it works just as it should without issue. so it appears to be only quali in Career. Rest of the game runs great!

I fear this sounds like a corrupt save.
I've not a lot of hope for this, but if you'd care to test @yungrickettts method here https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues-Bug-Reports/F1-23-Corrupted-save-file/m-p/13347007#M12520
This is a far better test that I could try as I don't really have a career save that wouldn't be other than "created for the purpose of" testing. Also, he is EA App and you are Steam, the files are in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[Steam ID]\[F1 23 game ID]
If you copy the files somewhere safe then you can restore them (which is essentially the fix suggestion).
Or if you use something like Macrium Reflect Free, take a snapshot of the drive first and then you can always restore it to the otherwise broken state it is now?
