Happens to a friend of mine all the time on our PS4 2021 copies.I presume that EA doesn't even know about it, because they don't QA their games at all.*shrug*

Does anything happen to either player that affects the current session (for example, are they removed from the session or receive no points at the end of the race), or is this just an incorrect message being displayed?

No, apparently the message has no effect. So it is a incorrect message and in 5 sessions of the two players, the message has appeared every time, if I have noticed correctly, but never one of the two was really eliminated.

I can't speak for F1 23, as I returned it due to the shoddy release quality.

In F1 2021, where this bug was and still is present, it is an incorrect message. I only play coop career, so while my data is anecdotal and limited, it seems to be the 'client' who is wrongly said to be retired.

I can only presume with the number of bugs that sail through from year to year without being addressed, that it is the same for 23.

I can confirm. My co-op partner will show up on screen as "x has retired from the session" even though he is still driving. The post-race results will then show that we've been "disconnected" for two hours, despite the fact that we go to the next screens and he is clearly there operating the menus.
