Driver name changes in game in real time?

Well here we are in June and another version of F1 game is nearly upon us. My question is, how hard is it to keep the names of the drivers updated in real time in the game? How long has Vettell been retired now? Yet he's still in the game. We've had multiple drivers coming and going yet we are stil stuck with the drivers from LAST YEAR?

How hard would it be to give us a name editor in game so that we can race with the actual drivers on race day to keep our experience as "Authentic" as possible? I don't see how changing names of drivers has any conflict with licensing?

  • @AnthonyLee59 If it was so simple you could do that with players in games like FIFA. Where you can edit the players stats but what you can’t do is change their names.

It’s licensing. You can’t buy F1 22 without Vettel in the game because as of 2022 he was in the sport. You can’t just change it simply because it’s 2023. You’re also complaining that he’s still in the game on the F1 23 board. He will not be in the game for F1 23.

@AnthonyLee59 I'm not entirely sure what you're on about with keeping "names of the drivers updated in real time in the game".

If you mean having F1 22 change its roster to reflect the F1 23 season, that's not going to happen. You bought a game that promised to represent the 2022 F1 season, and if delivered that.
Now if we had a GaaS/live service game, that would be different and people could and should expect an updated roster to keep up stride with the sport.

You definitely should see how a product licensed for a specific season or championship would be infringing that deal if it were to update its roster to reflect that of a different year.
In-game editors are a different story. Yes, that would be lovely to a certain point. That'd be an extra, though.
  • So let's say we get the game and 2 days later Piastri and Hamilton quit. So we're stuck the whole year with outdated names?

    That's BS!

@AnthonyLee59No because that would mean they are quitting during the 2023 season. So therefore whoever came in to replace them would also  replace them in F1 23. As it covers the 2023 season

Not so fast. We have had frozen rosters before. In season replacements have not been reflected IIRC.

Did we have a later switch than Gasly / Kyvat? (2016)

Think they might have been switched before the game was released.

Vandoorne stood in for Alonso, Haryanto replaced by Ocon. Pretty sure they weren’t added.

@SteveJackson I can’t remember that far back…. I’d like to think codemasters are a lot more nimble these days. 😂 Giving we get constant driver stat updates across the season.

    I maybe wrong even I’m not infallible😎

Wait what? Never expected to hear those words from you😂

Last mid game cycle driver change was Albon/Gasly at Red Bull 2019 iirc really with Gasly first and then in a later update Albon to RB

@Meza994 Well as I’m all knowing I know it helps if I pretend I’m not always all knowing 😇😂
