Why is it that during qualifying, I have to change my ERS via the MFD menu, but during the race, ERS is done simply with the push of a button? Is it possible to have push button deploy in quali? Very inconvenient to change it via the MFD. Am I missing some sort of strategy behind this?
@RyKnocks ERS in the game is automatically deployed during qualifying using the 'Hotlap' option, which deploys the battery throughout the lap. You're meant to keep it on the whole lap. However, during the race, ERS is manually deployed using the 'Overtake' option (which is the only option since battery deployment levels were removed in F1 2020).
@RyKnocks ERS have a few programmed maps that you can change via the MFD. Those
None - no energy deployed. The ERS is only harvesting energy;
Medium - deploys energy in key parts of the track, like corner exits. It intends to still harvest more energy than it deploys, giving you a positive balance at the end of each lap;
Hot Lap - intends to deploy the full 4MJ allowed by the regulations throughout a single lap. Basically the qualifying mode.
On top of all that, there's a mode you can manually trigger with a button, Overtake mode. It will deploy the full ~161HP instantly and constantly until you disable it – or you reach the 4MJ limit.
During the Quali you can change between None and Hot Lap through the MFD. During the race you'll only have the Medium mode enabled in the MFD, but obviously can always trigger the Overtake mode manually with the assigned button.
They serve different purposes, I hope that's clear now.
Medium/Hot Lap modes will have the ERS automatically deploying energy on key spots of the track, with the amount of energy depending on the mode. Overtake is a manual and temporary override function to deploy energy as the driver sees fit, mostly to fight for position.
Hot Lap - intends to deploy the full 4MJ allowed by the regulations throughout a single lap. Basically the qualifying mode.
@mariohomoh haven’t done too many qualy sessions recently but I don’t think I get close to deploying the full 4mj over a single lap. IIRC I think I use about 60%. Is there anything I should be doing to ensure it all get used up?
@Monzstar83 You sure you're looking at the MGU-K deployment gauge and not the ES gauge?
I'm not a fan of this year's HUD as it makes this info harder to see. But notice how the yellow bar at the center is your ES, your whole ERS battery. I had a number from a proper source somewhere but can't find it right now, but you can bet that the ES can hold significantly more than 4MJ. So you will never go from 100% to zero in a single lap as that would require dumping way more than 4MJ.
The MGU-K deploymentcap (4MJ) is represented by the green outline on the throttle gauge on the right. It will always start the lap (any lap) full and empty as you go about the track. This one should, indeed, zero out or get close to zero as you wrap a lap on Hotlap mode.
The MGU-K harvestcap (2MJ) is represented by the red outline on the brake gauge on the left. Again, it will always start the lap empty – it's a harvesting cap, not deployment after all.
Taking this qualifying session from Marcel in Bahrain, for instance. Top pic is when he's approaching the final corner on his outlap, about to switch the ERS to Hotlap map. Bottom pic is him at the end of his hotlap, having drained most of the MGU-K 4MJ cap, and the last one is when he's about to cross the S/F line – when the caps get restored back to full.
@mariohomoh will definitely check it out - thanks for the info. Will be a while though as I’m currently focusing on getting my base setups done and then
@mariohomoh So then is there any reason to turn off the ERS deploy during qualifying?
I always thought ERS was just the Yellow bar in the middle. I didn’t know there was a deploy cap (green) that resets every lap.
Does the yellow bar mean anything during quali?
What I do is as soon as I pull out of the pits, I turn off ERS deploy for my outlap because I don’t want to waste ERS. As I come into my flying lap, I turn it back on, but sometimes that means trying to turn it on in the middle of a turn or chicane which is kind of troublesome. What’s the easiest/best approach here?
From what you’re saying, it sounds like I should just forget the yellow bar and leave ERS on Hotlap since it resets every lap.
@RyKnocks There is no reason to turn off ERS while you do your Hot Lap no. The only exception is when you are on a track where your deployment cap is reached before finishing the lap and you find some tactical use in disabling in somewhere else instead of the last straight. That happened on Portimao in last years game (don't know if on this years, too), but it also happened with my high downforce setup in Qatar. However, I didn't think I benefit much from disabling it somewhere else.
But as you said: You benefit from disabling it on your Out Lap for harvesting the ERS for your Hotllap, and you benefit from disabling it on your In lap in career to save your MGU-K
@RyKnocks Well, the yellow bar is still relevant depending on how many hot laps you're planning on doing, in case you sleep on it and don't recharge enough for another lap.
And on Career and My Team modes I guess you'd be adding wear to the many ERS components if you keep it on hotlap even when you're not on a flying lap? It's been a while, I don't remember what the wear scales with for them.
So I guess my initial feedback still stands. Since there’s only two modes in qualifying, None or Hotlap, I wish it was as simple as pressing the overtake button to switch between the two.
You can bind a button for ERS modes since... Haha I actually don't even remember playing a F1 game where you couldn't 😂 It's in the settings. Scroll down on the key bindings section.
I always had buttons mapped to ERS, brake bias, and differential on my controller. Dropped ERS after F1 2020 or 2021 because didn't find it a hassle to go through the MFD after the ERS was simplified.
