FPS stays at half of my max refresh rate

Product: F1 23
Platform:Steam-PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
Summarize your bug So when I've opened the game and sometime later when i need to tab-out to do something else and then tab back in the game fps is suddenly locked at like 72 fps with vsync turned on, when my monitor is 144hz and my 3070ti is plenty powerful for the game. The game does not work properly with the fps after tabbing out and back in. In all game modes when on track driving.
What is your 16 digit Report Code? vgvg-dmcd-rkat-aese

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? For me I just have to enter time trial for example and go out on track, then tab out and back in and there you go.

What do you expect to see? regular 144hz refresh rate

  • @rocketgamer21  Nvidia Reflex is currently partially broken, set it to "Off" or "On".

The option "On+Boost" seem to engage half-rate or quarter-rate V-sync which is causing the low framerate.

  • I have a similar problem sometimes. on PC. Sometimes my game is locked to my refresh rate and no matter what I do I am unable to "unlock" it. I have a 175hz monitor and the fps is sometimes locked at that whether I turn vsync on or off it stays like that..then all of a sudden it will jump to 250 fps without me touching any settings...only happens in this game.

@rocketgamer21 what is your setting for the vsync interval and are any things in your driver set to override the settings in the game?

If you have vsync turned on and your fps rate goes below 144 fps, then your fps will drop to 72 accordingly. That's what vsync is supposed to do. Me personally, I have a 240 Hz monitor and vsync turned off, but I've also enabled a custom framerate limit of 120 fps. You might want to turn off vsync as well and use a custom framerate limit of 144 fps for example and see if the game runs more to your liking then.

@EyTschej  This isn't necessarily true, what you describe is adaptive V-sync or half-rate V-sync.

This is not the default behaviour for V-sync.

V-sync is only doing frame synchronization to reduce or remove frame tearing (displaying frames of different age while during the time it takes to display a frame), when falling below the threshold, it will disengage and you would get stutter and tearing as it is no longer possible to sync the frames to the monitor, but it will not actively drop the framerate.

See image below for the V-sync behaviour in the settings in F1 23:
