Well, new record. I requested a Steam refund for F1 24 after five minutes of "play". F1 23 had stopped connecting to my Thrustmaster T248 so I uninstalled it. When F1 24 went on sale, I picked it up, uninstalled and reinstalled the Thrustmaster drivers, made sure the T248 was at the latest firmware, booted F1 24 -- "No controller detected."

Yeah, I'm going to wait for Assetto Corsa EVO next month and buy it.
