Yesterday, I tried to recreate this problem. But only on 25% race in an Aston Martin with Alonso as my teammate on level 82 in GP mode. Using 3 different setups and ERS set to auto. But couldn't find what is being reported here.
Here are the results with the default (preset 3) setup. 1.5 tenths faster than Alonso (so an acceptable gap) which shows I'm close to the right level.
And the race result.
My times to show I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary
And Alonso's times
Next I did the same thing on level 82 with the top time trail setup. Qualifying result, I was half a second quicker but thought my tyres would fall off more during the race.
Race result shows a bigger gap to my teammate compared to the default.
My times with the top time trail setup
Alonso's times
Then I tried with the setup I use for racing. Qualifying result. I beat Alonso by a bigger margin.
Race result level 82 still. Biggest margin so far
My times
Alonso's times
So I can't recreate the problem being reported, but tonight I will try a 100% race in a Haas on level 82 and see what happens then.
Maybe it is just the differences between the cars, or the use of ERS?
100% race, I decided to put it up to level 84 after I beat Alonso in previous test. Also, Hulk isn't as good as Alonso. Using the default setup with ERS set to auto. Here's what happened.
Qualifying result, I'm 3 tenths faster than Hulk. So maybe could have put it up to 85 but still within the acceptable range allowing for the 3-tenths AI fluctuation.
Race results, the Hulk retired on lap 54 out of 57, but I was around 30 seconds in front by then.
My times
Hulks times
So again I couldn't recreate the problem being reported, and I'm just a bog-standard player. Playing at roughly the right level. I'm not going to run the different setups on this test, but I will do tests at 100% races on 85 at both Miami and Austria, as they're the other 2 tracks that had come out at 82 with Alonso as my teammate.

Today i did career mode with Leclerc at Melbourne, AI in quali on 100 and was 0,05 sec in front of Verstappen. I turned down the AI for race to 90 and was around 2 sec in front of Verstappen on the finish line after a 35% race. I use ERS overtake in quali but for me it makes sense to use it and it doen't make sense the AI is only using hotlap with energy remaining after the lap. IRL the drivers are using ERS too. But maybe my quali pace is just a lot better than race pace, don't know... And as i said, i didn't have this issue in previous games.
I'm using the race setups from simracingsetups.com. (Should also mean race pace should be better)
Its not a drama to adjust the AI before every session, but would be better if not...

I've just finished a 100% Grand Prix on level 87 as Magnussen (which was really close to my teammate with the default setup) Which has always been the way Codemasters say to do it. Auto ERS
Qualifying results, I couldn't get much closer to the Hulk. Yes I'm 2nd to last, but I am in a Haas so expected to be down there.
Race results, finished 7 places higher up and 18 seconds in front of the Hulk.
My times to show I'm doing nothing out of the ordinary
And the Hulk times
So again I fail to recreate the problem. I'll try 1 more time around Austria on 87 with Max as my teammate.
I also noticed there were not too many ERS/DRS trains in the race result pages.

!00% race in a Red Bull. Level 87, Max as a teammate. At Austria. Auto ERS.
Qualifying Results, Within 2 tenths of Max (which is acceptable) But probably need to knock my level down by 2.
Race results Max only did 1 stop, while I did 2 (I did think of 1 stopping, but my engineer doesn't suggest alternative strategies)
My conclusion is that if you have it on the right level, the AI aren't faster in race than qualifying.
I'm not being patronising here, Just trying to help, but maybe some need to refind their AI level again on this year's game.
Last year I did all 26 tracks using this method And my average over all tracks was 91, this year my average over all 25 tracks is 85. That's like 6 tenths a lap difference. If you do use that method I suggest using Alonso (2nd best driver in the game) as your teammate. You can do all 25 tracks in a few days, but will make the game so much more enjoyable. Make sure you set the weather to clear.
If you don't have the time to do all tracks, here are the tracks that came out as 85 when doing this year's game. But everyone has their different strengths around different tracks.
Australia
China
Miami
Imola
Austria
Hungary
Monza
Abu Dhabi
I've never had the straight line speed problem that is being reported while doing these tests(OK, this is just GP mode) or in my driver career (but started in F2)

Does it really take you 2 months and still no any update. It's bug with big impact. I can not play carrier mode as the AI is bugged. I just bought game to play this mode and 3 months after release game mode with most changes is unplayable. @EA_Vendcera
