I’d like to always qualify in realistic positions based on my car’s performance, but I don’t know if the AI uses the overtake mode during qualifying laps. Sometimes it feels like they don’t use the overtake mode, and that makes me gain many positions.
Could you clarify this for me?

They do use overtake mode during the lap.
If you feel they sometimes don't use it and you're using it as well, the difficulty is too low (which is normal, the difficulty is not well optimized), unless you're playing 110 AI.
Its very weird. I always do 2 outings. Sometimes Im in a realistic postition without the overtake and sometimes with. But I guess the AI uses it because you do not really use your energy with the Hotlap mode and you have a lot spare energy to use at the end of the lap.
