Connection Issues Troubleshooting

Connection Issues

There are a number of factors that can contribute to your connection status. Everything from your IP to the placement of your router.

If you’re experiencing lag or connection issues, there are a few steps you can try to improve it.

Check the servers are not experiencing issues

If you’re unable to get into any multiplayer games, check to see if your platform or local ISP is experiencing any outages.

Check your account

For PS4 users, check your PlayStation Plus account is active.

For Xbox One users, check your Xbox Live Gold account is active.

Try a Hardwired Connection

Using a hardwire connection can be more reliable than a wireless. If you’ve been playing using Wi-Fi, try a wired connection instead.

Move the router

If you can’t use a hardwire connection, make sure that your console or PC is as close to the router as possible. Walls and large objects may interfere, as can other electronics.

Advanced Use: Routers are also susceptible to Interference from other Wireless products such as Wireless Telephones etc. You can log into your Router and change the Channel ID https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/network-wifi/how-change-wi-fi-channel-3325316/

Fully shutdown and reboot your console or PC

It sounds like an old IT joke, but sometimes turning it off and on again can help. For fully powering down your PS4 you can check out this official support page here. For how to restart or power cycle your Xbox One, head to their support page here.

Make sure your system is fully up to date

Make sure you’ve fully updated your consoles or your PC.

https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-one/console/system-update-overview

For your PC, try updating your drivers with the latest ones available.

Restart your Router

Try fully powering down your router and unplugging it. Leave it for about a minute and then plug it back in, turn it back on and try connecting to it again.

For PCs – check background processes and applications

Check to see if your PC is running anything unnecessary in the background that could affect its performance.

Note: 3rd Party Recording software such as OBS & MSI Afterburner can cause the game to crash if not configured correctly.

    Port Forwarding

Having connection issues? You can open (forward) some TCP or UDP ports for troubleshooting.

    What are ports?

Ports are endpoints between two connections. A port number is assigned to each end, like an address, to direct the flow of internet traffic.

If you’re having trouble connecting to any of our online games — and you have tried basic connection troubleshooting — you may need to open some ports on your network connection.

    How to set up ports

    Consoles

To set up TCP or UDP ports for consoles, follow steps for:

    PC

Setting up ports on a PC means accessing your router settings. The steps are different for each router.

If you need help, we recommend you contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

    Ports you need to know

Every computer or console has standard ports that are most commonly used when they connect to the internet, PlayStation™Network, or Xbox Live. Try opening (forwarding) these first:
