Re: Controller Direction Change

Just to add my opinion here, this change of direction / feeling of input delay is a very separate issue to the lack of FFB in other input devices.

As you can see in the video by @snowirbix there is a very clear 'return to center' delay when changing from left to right and vice versa giving a very unresponsive feeling that is exacerbated with higher speed.

It's worth mentioning that this issue exists on keyboard as well as controllers from my experience (I have an Xbox Series X and Dualsense controller to test).

This return to center handling style is also in F1 2021 but it is not nearly as pronounced as it is in F1 22 so it doesn't feel half a bad to drive, you can test this yourself by doing what is shown in @snowirbix video.

The only way to eliminate this delay in direction change is to use a wheel and that is not fair to the vast majority of players who play this game with a controller.

Just to be clear, in my opinion, I don't think the steering in this game needs to be more sensitive when using a controller, it just needs to be smooth and consistent.

If I'm navigating through a chicane and I go from full left to full right I expect a smooth transition from left to right, what is happening now is more like left > straight > right.

A consistent rotation of the wheel for those direction inputs and not a short period of going straight in the middle would make this game feel so much better.

That's just my personal experience with this issue, I really hope this gets changed.

  • This centre delay has been in all of the recent F1 games I have played, however I did immediately notice that it felt a lot more pronounced in this years game. I was going to make a post myself, but I thought maybe it was just in my head haha.

I think the settings codies are using are probably the same as in previous games, but because the cars are heavier this year it feels a lot more unresponsive and delayed when switching directions. Of course that’s just my initial thought process and I could be wrong and the delay is actually longer.

    Hey @pawel567

I don't have any updates to share on this at the moment, but I'll follow up and let you know if I have some news.

  • any updates on this? its very hard to race against wheel players online because of this issue

AKA we don't give a flying damn, and keep buying a new game each year as this problem persists.

    Classic EA and Codemasters.

fix this damn issue man! im getting really angry when playing this damn game due to this damn issue this is really f*cking annoying me!

  • Hello @EA_Kent , like someone mentionned above, take a controller, and play Jeddah, you will quickly see you cannot do any S turn correctly because it is waaaaay too slow to change direction.

@EA_Kent if this isnt [CM - removed] fixed, i aint buying F1 23 or must I say, Sim Life 23. It is clear EA does not value controllers when vast majority are controllers.

@EA_Kent It's now November and NOTHING has been done to address this issue... I can't enjoy driving on tracks with high speed s-sections as they become borderline impossible with this ridiculous "speed-sensitive filter"...
  • No word on this yet? game is on sale but it's not worth it if it's still unplayable

@AlexandrethezIt’s not unplayable. It doesn’t effect the majority off people

Never had this issue.  I’ve tested using 3 different dual sense controllers. With  Over 500 hours played

  • @ScarDuck14 it was an exaggeration of course, i meant it's not competitive to use a controller as it was the previous years (although they were also not perfect with this issue)

@Alexandrethez Rumour has it controllers have been nerfed since 2020 after E-Sporters complained controllers were OP🤷‍♂️.

Controller support is lacking I’ve posted many times and David Greco knows my feelings and as he’s a decent guy has engaged with me over the issue: Especially as controller support and assist options in grid legends is awesome in comparison.

But the input delay I honestly believe can be dialled out using camera and FFB(max wheel rotation) settings
  • @ScarDuck14 Yeah i heard about that in 2020, felt the direction change delay in 2021 a bit more noticeable but still manageable, but in 22 it's very time costly to the point that i didn't buy the game haha.

I'll have a look at the wheel rotation thing when i get the chance, but what did you do to the camera to help with that?

@AlexandrethezJust reduced field of vision. Using Tvpod. I usually set it at -10. But it’s also dependent on how big your Tv/monitor is and how far you sit from it.  Further you sit away the more it needs to be decreased

When I was looking into the delayed input I set all settings back to default and noticed car wouldn’t rotate as quick at higher speeds (which is where most people encounter the problem). So I increased fov to max and found I pretty much over shot every corner cause the car wouldn’t turn in.

It maybe because I’m not used to having the view that far back. But im off the mind especially in Tv pod view that changing the FOV changes the turning axis. After all it was proven that FPS was had an effect on the cars physics. So to me it’s a possibility.

Also with pads last few years decreasing wheel rotation has been the way. But for me personally this year increasing it is the way.

But also a lot is down to personal preference and lots of on track fine tuning.   I appreciate most people don’t have the time and patience to do this.  Especially as I have the time to put the hours it and after 500 hours I’m still tweaking it

These controller setting were posted by @BarryBL for F1 2021 I know: however I still find they work better than default settings.

For those unfamiliar with Barry he was Codemasters Forum Administrator and probably knows gameplay side better than anyone.   I’ve seen many controller settings videos where a YouTube guru  says understeer enhanced and wheel dampener don’t apply to controllers: If that were true Barry wouldn’t have changed them:    Codemasters is closing soon.  Not sure if it will be archived or nuked.

FFB 75 on track 35 kerbs 25 off track 20 dampener 10 understeer off  set all linearity sliders to 40.

@Alexandrethez you are correct i also have this problem i found a sort of solution for this that is that you have to set the controller sensivity with steering to 100 there are two settings i have on 100 with the turning its a temporarily solution but it has to be fixed its in the game since day 1 and we are already half a year in the games life cycle and there still isnt anything done to fix it and since last update aka 1.17 it feels even worse i had a time trail in saudi arabia on an older version of the game and that was with equal cars and i was a second slower than i was before the patch so yeah this definetly is a massive problem

  • @ScarDuck14 Thanks for the detailed response, turns out i'm already using the FOV as you do (-11 for me), couldn't find another FOV setting that helped me, although i wouldn't doubt it could change the turning as you said, codies and their engine can have some quirkiness.

Increasing wheel rotation did make it a bit better tho, thanks for that tip, i'm trying to make the controller competitive in Jeddah and this helps a bit but it's not there yet.

@Alexandrethez Back in the day of Gran Turismo 5. I found the answer to passing harder Gold trophies was in the game settings. 😁 As a result I can’t stop tinkering with the game’s settings. Especially if I’ve got my cars setup wrong for a race. Playing with wheel rotation helps negate any excess understeer/oversteer.

Tv pod FOV -20 I’m constantly turning in early and massively cutting slow corners. At +20 I turn in to late miss the corner entirely and end up in a wall.

The right FOV setting is so important in racing games. But hardly any games give you a detailed explanation or how to set it. I only know because I stumbled upon a you tube video.
