Make sure you change it a complete different position, changing from left striker to a right striker will not work it has to be a full position change. Downside is will take your managers rating all way down to start of a sub again which is annoying but is the only work around for it right now until EA fix this.
Tried this too. When I switched to midfielder the only objective I didn't fulfill was to win player of the year (I fully completed all other mandatory + wage increase objectives) so of course it didn't work for me. It's definitely a good possible workaround if winning player of the year wasn't one of your optional objectives.
Just seen this also. It says the win player of the year is "Optional" but still will not let you progress forward, this game is so broken it is ridiculous
