@AndressonnIt's definitely possible to progress without paying. I refuse to spend any money on FC points and i've not even used the pre-order ultimate points yet and i'm a 16-18 win WL player and i'm in elite division. But i've really had to play a LOT this year and learn how to play against a certain type of player to get there
BUT with that being said, it's noticeable this year more than ever before that the pay to win players are gaining advantages in game and I think it's because of how ridiculously overpowered the AI is. If someone has paid to get all of the most OP players on the game AND uses a broken custom pressure tactic then you really have to grind and make 0 errors to even have a chance of beating them. You'll have certain games where you feel like you're fighting with your own players to do what you want them to do, let alone having to battle against the opposition.
I've played fifa since 98 and probably played UT for about 5 or 6 years now and I can say with 100% certainty that this is the sweatiest and least rewarding game they've ever made. Rivals and friendlies genuinely feel like a chore whereas in the past they could be used for people to help eachother move forward. The community has got extra toxic this year
Regarding the community, I remember a few years back when they did one of those "win X games in online with X players" to get a trade token
All the community decided it was a chore so to make the process as quick and painless as possible whoever scored first would "win" and the other would quit. If they didn't quit, then you completed the match as normal, no harm no foul.
When EA found out, they threatened to ban players for doing it.
EA literally didn't want the community being nice to each other because, well, who knows why

@sniperfox29 even as recently as Fifa 23 we had way more objectives that were in the cup mode rather than Squad battles and rivals but like you say, for the mostpart people would work together and help eachother complete the objectives. If it was score X number of goals then people would play goal for goal first half then play properly second half... and it was at the point where people would even carry on playing after they'd finish the objectives just to give games away and help people
But then after the World cup stuff where loads of people got soft bans for playing golden goal they decided to bring in daily/weekly limits into the cups and ever since they've been horrible to play and people don't help eachother anymore. It's a shame, previous years the community felt a hell of a lot better than it does this year
